Stuck on a Pyramid puzzle - help?

I’ve come across this puzzle in an adventure book and I am completely stuck.

Is anyone around who’s good at this sort of puzzle and can figure it out? The answer’s got to be less than 400 but other than that I am struggling!

If the first level of a pyramid is made up of one block of stone, and the second level is made up of nine blocks, how many blocks would be needed to make up a pyramid 6 levels high?

286 I think … top level is 1x1 square, then 3x3, 5x5 … all the way to 11x11 on the bottom.
