I soaked some red onion for dinner last night and this morning my house absolutely stinks! Help 🥲

I mean, I’ve used onions before, plenty of times. I’m a big onion/garlic user. But for some reason this particular onion has absolutely seeped its way into .. the walls?! The floor?! I don’t know.. but it’s awful!

DH changed the bin this morning because it was so potent. I cooked and left the windows and back doors open (open plan) for hours after dinner. Everything has been washed, dried and put away. But I keep getting a waft of really strong onion coming through downstairs! How do I get rid of it😟

I’ve mopped,
I’ve sprayed disinfectant (method) on all the tops. I’ve washed and bleached the sink. Ive used some lemon wipes on the table.. I don’t even know where the smell is actually coming from!

When you say 'soaked' what do you mean?

when we eat raw onion I soak it in some ice water for about 30 minutes before we eat it to take out some of the sharpness as it’s for a salad.

I was just planning tonight tea, was going to make a cous cous with some veggies in.. but I have a little oniony PTSD brewing and have decided not to include onion in tonight dinner 🤣

I'm weirdly fascinated by this thread 🧅😅 Are you sure you haven't inhaled a tiny bit of onion?

Edited

Don’t scare me like that 🤣 so I just walk around smelling like raw onion now?!

Its day 3: onion smell is starting to fade. The end is in sight. Still getting an occasional waft but nothing like yesterday or the day before. I rejoice!

Have you curtains in that room or a sofa? Might need to wash them/covers etc

TY78910 · 24/07/2025 16:31

Could it be that you dropped a bit of onion somewhere and not noticed?

Sulking · 25/07/2025 13:38

I’m going mad! I can still smell this bloody onion 😭 it’s strong again, definitely oniony and coming in wafts. I’ve pulled the fridge out and check under it, nothing.. we’ve no curtains downstairs everything is fitted wooden blinds.

I’ve given the sofa a sniff all over and it smells bloody lovely as I only washed it with scent boosters a week or so ago.. reluctant to do it again so soon but I might do it anyway in desperation.

I thought the smell was getting better yesterday but today it’s just as bad again and I’m at my wits end.

i will never buy onions again, onions are the enemy.

Inside of the bin, at the bottom? Like has onion juice leaked through a tiny hole in the bin liner?

Saucery · 25/07/2025 13:49

The chopping board you used to slice the onion?

Cinaferna · 25/07/2025 13:57

Some onions have no shame, OP. But try to remember NAOALT.

Can everyone else smell it?

Came to ask the same. Why?

🤣🤣 its not the bin, I’ve cleaned that out. I don’t think it’s the chopping board either. I’m starting to think one of the kids have hidden a bit of onion somewhere to taunt me. Or DH is cutting onions up before I start work just to drive me insane and see how far he can push me before I crack. It won’t be long before I’m paranonionoid

I store spring onions in a vase with a tiny bit of water to keep them fresh longer. The water becomes somewhat pungent… Have you spilled some of the water you used to soak the onions somewhere? A few drops on a tea towel or a dishcloth maybe or in the bottom of the bin? It wouldn’t take much.

Masonjarcandle · 25/07/2025 14:23

Have you sniffed the sink drain and overflow to see if its coming from there?

CrystalMighty · 25/07/2025 14:29

I'm just here enjoying the thread. Oh for the laughter emoji 🤣🤣🧅

Your house will be free of evil spirits at least. It's an old witchcraft remedy.

I soak sliced red onion before adding to a salad etc. It takes a bit of the 'harshness' out of them- but yes, the water absolutely stinks

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 25/07/2025 16:32

Leave some blue cheese out in this hot weather. That’ll drive the onion smell away. It was a trick used by my great granny - or “Old Stinky” as she was affectionately known by her neighbours.

Yes I do this a lot or with oil or hot water. It makes the sweetness come out and is less acidic. I tend to try to do this in a lidded container, lock n lock type thing

It will disappear in time. A Prices cooks candle or something like that.

Is the onion ND or has MH issues perhaps?
