A member of 1D is from here

The Nightlife here was notorious in the 80/90’s
Became a city quite recently

I live in a small market town which has its very own world heritage site. It is often associated with a certain Scottish independence fighter from the 13th & 14th century.

Tarkan · 20/07/2025 23:39

William the Lion (King William I of Scotland) is buried a 5 minute walk from my house in an abbey he founded in the 12th century.

We have the closest professional football ground to the sea in the UK (possibly Europe, there’s always some debate there).

You’ll get some lovely smoked fish here despite the fact they actually originated in a village a little further along the coast.

Oh and Billy Connolly apparently lost his virginity in an area near my old road.

Calvin Harris was born and brought up here.
He now owns a pub here and can be seen occasionally.
I once stopped when driving to let him cross the road ...claim to fame

We have a largely 11th century cathedral with the longest uninterrupted nave in the world and two towers. The city was badly damaged in the Baedeker bombings of WW2 but the cathedral was largely unscathed. Our city was a hub for the wool trade in medieval times. We have a highly rated university and hospital.

From a high building in the centre of the city it is possible to see fields in all directions.

We are at the end of a motorway.

We have everything a bigger city has, but on a smaller scale. Theatres, cinemas, restaurants, markets.

We aren't very industrial, most of our employment is in the service sector.

Tommy Cooper grew up here, Rabbi Lionel Blue was sent here during the war, and JK Rowling went to university here.

👍🏻 Yorkshire Tea is the same company as Betty’s Tearooms. Not a lot of people seem to realise that.

Lardychops · 21/07/2025 00:24

Well if you were coming here you might meet an man with seven wives, with seven cats…each with seven kits…

St. Ives. But which one? Cambridgeshire or Cornwall?

IlovetoKnitandRead · 21/07/2025 00:33

A Northumbrian King was defeated in battle and his severed arm was taken by a raven and dropped. A tree grew on the spot and a spring appeared. The town is named after the king and the tree.

Violinist64 · 21/07/2025 00:39

The conductor Malcolm Sargent lived where l live and Daniel Lambert, the fattest man in Britain, died here. It is the most complete Georgian town in the country and has many churches.

Harry Potter never came here.
Harry Potter was never filmed here.
But that doesn't stop us having at least 4 Harry Potter shops on our most famous street.

Honestly, it's a Shambles....

Katherine Parr was said to be born in the castle that her family owned, but that’s likely to be just legend.

It’s an “auld grey town”

To make it super easy - mint cake!
