It's dinner here too. Breakfast, dinner and supper.

I say breakfast, dinner & tea! (Don't know if it's a Scottish thing?)

I quite like Rainbow Bridge. It's easier (for someone who has just lost their beloved pet) than saying 'they're dead.' I dislike most of the sayings people have come up with on here, but IMO this one is gentle and harmless.

You're entitled to not like it, but not be pissy with people who say it. If I said to someone that my dog or cat has gone over the Rainbow Bridge and someone told me to not be so daft and just say they're DEAD', I'd tell them to go fuck themselves and would never speak to them again unless they apologised. If they didn't say sorry, they'd be ignored by me forevermore. No loss.

Oh God, I'm not a dick, of course I wouldn't say that. I might inwardly cringe but I wouldn't tell them that, especially when their beloved pet has died! It's just a phrase that gives me the shudders

CyanMaker · 16/07/2025 21:07

littles( referring to children) and cuteness overload

Zov · 16/07/2025 21:10

Chlo33 · 16/07/2025 20:15

"I'm not gonna lie"

"Give your head a wobble"

" now we're cooking on gas"

I haven't ever heard that last one @Chlo33 'Now we're cooking on gas.'

When do people say that?

Fair enough. 😆 You're entitled to be annoyed by it. I still think it's sweet though. 🐶🐱 😄

Ooh it's iconic 😓
Blue sky thinking
Low hanging fruit
Moving forward
Lessons have been learnt
Robust approach
Girly night out
Warning issued to homeowners (usually clickbait or something similarly inane)

SilkyMoonface70 · 16/07/2025 21:14

“I’m not being funny”
”It’s like”
“Can I get”.,,,
“It’s not that deep”

I was today years old when I found out……

Holding space

Holibobs

Fam / Famalam

Crimbo

Making memories

Boils my piss

Using the phrase “It’s giving…….” but then missing out the word “vibes” at the end.

Forever home

Most of these annoy me too. But I do like 'boils my piss' 😆

Using the phrase “It’s giving…….” but then missing out the word “vibes” at the end.

I hate this too. When did this start?! First time I heard it was on Big Brother in 2024 I think - the Civilian one. The one with the posh girl from Shrewsbury who was married to a Mayor.

dynamiccactus · 16/07/2025 21:16

Side hustle and staycation. I especially hate staycation when people go away overnight. Surely staycation means staying home! When I was young you either went on holiday or day trips.

Zov · 16/07/2025 21:18

I’m sort of with you there, Zov. It seems awfully blunt to say “they’re dead”
I also don’t like the expression “put down”. with regards to family pets, it seems brutal. I much prefer “put to sleep” We’ve just lost our gorgeous Ddog and I’m a bit sensitive at the moment…

Thank you @JeffLynnsGuitar 😃 Each to their own, but yes, I think it helps people to deal with the grief of losing a pet to say they went over the Rainbow Bridge. And yeah 'put down' sounds grim. 'Put to sleep' is better. But I still prefer over the Rainbow Bridge. Smile

I'm so sorry to hear about you losing your lovely dog. 💞

LOL no! 😆 Why is the 'Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and the wee donkey' guy there? What's this about? 😬

😂

Those 2 bug me too!

"The proof is in the pudding". NO, IT ISN'T! I always want to scream.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Dammit.

I'm loving all the comments on this thread.

I think responders must all (like me) be fans of BBCRadio4's wonderful & long-running comedy series, "Ed Reardon's Week". If you haven't - do.

Zov · 16/07/2025 21:23

@BitSilly and @Chlo33 I googled, and both those sayings just mean we're doing well and things are going to plan. ('Cooking on gas' and 'sucking diesel.') WTF? 😆

BitSilly · 16/07/2025 21:24

It's one of his famous lines, or a "Tedism" if you will... 😂

Fortunately unlikely to happen with our current monarch (is that treason) but I hated the expression "Platty Jubes" for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

dynamiccactus · 16/07/2025 21:25

Zov · 16/07/2025 21:20

Those 2 bug me too!

Staycation bugs me too. It means staying at home and doing day trips, not a UK holiday!

BitSilly · 16/07/2025 21:28

@dynamiccactus I saw that on a MN thread once, and couldn't for the life of me work out what it was 😅

Triggered…I can’t stand this new phrase! Whatever happened to that really affected me

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's ridiculously overused.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 16/07/2025 21:35

Comfort break.

Festivespirit85 · 16/07/2025 21:39

Hit the ground running - admittedly I've not heard this cliche for years, but it makes me cringe.
We are one big family here - I've not come to work for a family, I've come to earn money, and it usually means there's more backbiting that a mosquito at the height of summer!

I think these are regional.
