Lunch… its dinner here in durham x

Definitelyrandom · 16/07/2025 19:51

This thread has made me realise that I must be extremely intolerant as I agree that almost all of the suggested phrases are really irritating. I don’t care, either.

Pedant5corner · 16/07/2025 19:52

It's dinner here too. Breakfast, dinner and supper.

  • to tell you the truth/ to be honest with you (to me this implies that there’s been some insincerity when perhaps that’s not the intention of the statement!)
  • at the end of the day
  • let’s play it by ear
  • mercury is in retrograde (or similar to excuse/explain some behaviour)
  • Dog mum / similar
  • Trigger warning (and mentions the “trigger” which kind of defeats the point?)
  • its giving (“its giving wealth” when referring to someone owning something luxurious, for example)

my mother used to refer to her friend Dorothy as “my black friend Dorothy and I are going to the theatre….” 🙄

That is odd tbf. Confused

I also detest 'we are pregnant.' (As many people have mentioned...)

Zov · 16/07/2025 20:12

Oooh, thought of something else. Last year I got SICK of hearing about bloody BRAT SUMMER. Boooooooooring. I cared not one itoa about Charlie XC fucking X! 🙄

Chlo33 · 16/07/2025 20:15

"I'm not gonna lie"

"Give your head a wobble"

" now we're cooking on gas"

soontobeamama · 16/07/2025 20:16

I was today years old when I found out……

Holding space

Holibobs

Fam / Famalam

Crimbo

Making memories

Boils my piss

Using the phrase “It’s giving…….” but then missing out the word “vibes” at the end.

Forever home

beautifuldaytosavelives · 16/07/2025 20:16

Smashed it/smashing it/smash it - just no

to be fair - never contextually accurate

I’m not gonna lie - I presumed not

When you… as in ‘when you go to maccies and there’s no mcflurries’ - I’m always waiting for the end of the statement

I find life quite trying 🤣

I quite like Rainbow Bridge. It's easier (for someone who has just lost their beloved pet) than saying 'they're dead.' I dislike most of the sayings people have come up with on here, but IMO this one is gentle and harmless.

You're entitled to not like it, but not be pissy with people who say it. If I said to someone that my dog or cat has gone over the Rainbow Bridge and someone told me to not be so daft and just say they're DEAD', I'd tell them to go fuck themselves and would never speak to them again unless they apologised. If they didn't say sorry, they'd be ignored by me forevermore. No loss.

I’m sort of with you there, Zov. It seems awfully blunt to say “they’re dead”

I also don’t like the expression “put down”. with regards to family pets, it seems brutal. I much prefer “put to sleep” We’ve just lost our gorgeous Ddog and I’m a bit sensitive at the moment…

I get irritated by “Hi Guys” which features a lot online, usually said with fake sincerity.

”end of” which is a damn rude way of saying “I’m right and that’s it, don’t even think you’ve got an opinion”

“Stay safe, take care” more fake concern, particularly during Covid, so annoying as we were all trying to do our bit.

”You snooze, you lose” childish.
Hun, holibobs, little man, hubster, hubs,…. Yuk! Talk properly!

Love you to the moon and back (eww)

BunnyLake · 16/07/2025 20:27

I love the bones of you.

Conjures up a very unsexy, unromantic, unlovely image.

iseethembloom · 16/07/2025 20:32

Special shout out for (it makes me cringe to write the words) ‘love you all the pennies’.

🔪 🔫 ☠️ 😡

Justnevergetsthere · 16/07/2025 20:39

' Fly high ' - when someone has died. 😬

chocciebiscuits · 16/07/2025 20:44

Give your head a wobble. Only ever hear it on MN!

jaundicedoutlook · 16/07/2025 20:47

“Iconic” when 99% of the things so described are nothing of the sort.

”Across” when used on the news/radio as in “we’ll keep you across all the developments on [insert trite subject] as they happen…” no you won’t - we won’t actually splay ourselves across all the ghastly details of whatever nasty thing Richard Tice is going to say next. You’ll update us.

CatsnCoffee · 16/07/2025 20:50

FestivusMiracle · 16/07/2025 21:00

I’m in the cringe at ‘rainbow bridge’ bollocks. My dog DIED. We were heartbroken. If any friends had even attempted any rainbow bridge nonsense in their condolences, I’d have been beyond irritated.
