I don’t camp. A house big enough for everyone is usually about 2-3k a week before you’ve even fed everyone or done anything. If we go out for dinner it’s usually between 150-200 a time and that’s before you've added in any activities / lunches / snacks / spending money. These costs go up and up if the weather is crap too, no beach days etc.

plus a holiday that is self catering is not a holiday for me, too much like hard work.

I assume you're a really big family if accommodation and food is so expensive.

See, I much MUCH prefer self catering. It's very cost effective and we all muck in together to cook or take turns and we're pretty happy with board games, card games, hiking, galleries, museums, NT, EH, geocaching and so on. All completely free. And we'd be bored rigid on a beach holiday or an all inclusive pool/villa holiday.

Different strokes for different folks I guess and people spend their money how they see fit.

OhamIreally · 15/07/2025 17:40

Yes. I love going away and prioritise it. I even went abroad twice during Covid. The airport in July 2020 was a sad thing to behold and we had to quarantine for a fortnight when we got back but what are you gonna do?

SharkHairWrap · 15/07/2025 17:41

Usually, but airport stress and lack of sleep the last few times has made me think about not bothering again.

Your holiday sounds lovely if I didn’t have to take 4 teenagers with me! I love a house and gardens !

Do you go abroad every year for a holiday?
No

Does anyone else mostly have breaks within the UK?
Yes

SwedishEdith · 15/07/2025 18:00

The default choice would be abroad. UK holidays would be due to lack of cash, kids very young or something like COVID. I've seen a lot of the UK and nice though it can be for a break, it's not different enough to be a holiday.

rickyrickygrimes · 15/07/2025 19:13

Yes, because we live ‘abroad’ and it’s the only way to see family.

Okiedokie123 · 15/07/2025 19:15

Ive only been abroad once (as a teenager). No plans to do so again. Knowing how bad aeroplane flights are for the environment really upsets me. Im very happy exploring the UK. :)

PassingStranger · 15/07/2025 19:20

Yes abroad and a few short breaks in the UK too

myissuemychoice · 15/07/2025 19:30

I absolutely hate U.K. holidays. Overpriced and never quality that matches the cost. Can’t rely on the weather . I think it only works if you like the outdoors don’t mind rain and are ok with dogs everywhere

Melassa · 15/07/2025 19:32

Yes, but I live in continental Europe. Abroad is a fairly short (1 hour-ish) or a longer 3-4 hour drive to neighbouring countries. Worth it for the change in supermarket offerings alone.

i’ve even driven to the UK, but it was less of a holiday as we were visiting relatives. I travel to the UK sometimes for work and am always astonished at the ££££££ for fairly basic hotels and eating out. As a holiday destination it’s very pricey. And no, I no longer camp, I’m in my 50s and prefer my comforts, even if minimal.

Whoooo · 15/07/2025 19:40

Every 2/3 years on average except for 2020 and 2021.
It's very expensive now as the dc are older so its 4 x adult prices and we aren't beach holiday people so I find that adds to the cost.
We go somewhere in the UK every year and have had some fabulous holidays.
I don't think I'd bother going long haul again. Too much hassle/jet lag.

CosyNavyLeader · 16/07/2025 10:36

We do a week at Easter and two weeks in the summer

Sometimes a trip in October too.

Last year-

Halkidiki: 2 weeks summer
Costa del Sol: 5 nights October

Next year:

Tenerife: two weeks summer

No plans for October next year.

We went in 2022 to visit DD when she was on a year abroad with uni. Did a CityBreak last year. Just a couple of UK camping trips arranged this year, but more than happy with that.

TheNinny · 13/08/2025 19:19

have done for first 4 yrs but COL will push us to every other year-18 months now

TheNinny · 13/08/2025 19:20

DD first 4 years (bar covid) so really from 2-5.

BlueBulgari · 13/08/2025 19:23

Yes. Twice every year. Life is short and I want to see more places.

We never went overseas when the children were small; I wasn't prepared to risk the stress of the flight with four crying children. Now they are older and I'm taking every opportunity to get away. We don't always fly. Sometimes we drive or interrail.

Switcher · 13/08/2025 19:26

Btw why is it now called le Shuttle ? Sounds wanky. I still call it Eurotunnel. Best way of getting there though whatever it's called.

ForWarmPeachBird · 13/08/2025 19:28

I go abroad 7 times a year, usually 3 long haul trips and 4 short haul.

DinoLil · 13/08/2025 19:30

Not been abroad since 2012. I've only had three UK breaks since then as well.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/08/2025 19:32

We’ve been on a LOT of UK holidays and generally enjoyed them but I also like going abroad. Not so much for the weather but to experience something different

going to Netherlands next week and getting the overnight ferry, no need to fly

Edited

It’s been called le shuttle since 1994 though granted the original name was “eurotunnel le Shuttle”

LimoncelloSpritz · 13/08/2025 19:41

Yes, but then we live on mainland Europe so it’s relatively easy. Even in 2020 we went abroad twice. We used to drive a lot, these days I prefer the train. Still fly more than I feel I should though.

Berlinlover · 13/08/2025 19:43

BlondieMuver · 14/07/2025 22:30

Haven't been abroad since 1994

Why?

tartyflette · 13/08/2025 20:37

I haven’t flown since before Covid, we live in the southeast and it’s an easy drive to the Channel tunnel into France.
We’ve driven through France to Italy and Spain more than once and after Xmas we take the 24-hr ferry/cruise to Spain which is lovely as long as the weather is good! In bad weather it’s an effort to get out of your cabin.
We drive down to Andalucia and stay for the month. (retired and doing a lot of SKI-ing — Spending the Kids’ Inheritance.)
But this year we have booked a flight to Sicily for a week in late September too, for a last grab at some summer sun.
(i think Eurotunnel/Le Shuttle is trying for a stab at Franglais. Viz Miles Kington, RIP - ‘Let’s parler Franglais!’)
