Ive not been abroad since Covid, before that we used to go on holiday in Europe most yea, but now it feels like a faff and im not a fan of flying anymore but i cant help feeling im missing out. Does anyone else mostly have breaks within the UK?

Foreign travel is the only thing that keeps me sane.

Doitrightnow · 14/07/2025 22:51

Pre Covid, I would travel abroad a few times a year.

I lost my confidence with travelling after Covid and with a baby and did mostly UK holidays for 4 years. But recently took DC abroad alone, and regained the bug! Going to the Mediterranean by sleeper train in August!

yeesh · 14/07/2025 22:55

We do, only years we didn’t were 2021 & 2022 as I couldn’t be arsed with flying & all the Covid rules. We go away in the uk a few times a year for the weekend as well.

MiseryIn · 14/07/2025 23:00

Yes. Usually a few times a year. It’s my main “thing” really. I don’t do much else.
I can’t think of an adult year when I wouldn’t have been abroad to be honest.

LBFseBrom · 14/07/2025 23:05

I'm not fussed about going abroad.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 14/07/2025 23:06

A few times a year usually. And as we live in Scotland it’s the plane rather than the train.

MalcolmMoo · 14/07/2025 23:06

We used to usually do U.K. holidays as we have two dogs. But then when we had our baby we’ve gone abroad each year and just do weekends away with the dogs in the U.K.

I Couldn’t be bothered with all the faff but our little one loves all the swimming outdoors etc. abroad so we just do eurocamp which normally works out cheaper than a week away in the U.K.

AliceMcK · 14/07/2025 23:09

I’ve had technically 4 overseas holidays in 49 years. There are a few reasons:

Ive travelled and lived in multiple countries so going “on holiday” abroad has never bothered me.
i don’t see the point of leaving the country during summer to spend money in a place overcrowded with tourists when I can relax and enjoy what’s going on closer to home
Im tight and feel like spending money on the types of holidays I can afford is a waste.

Saying that there are several places I’d still like to visit but they are save up for an exploring most if not the whole or most of a country type trip/holiday and Disney, that I would go on holiday for if I could afford it.

We’ve done a 5 day uk city break & long weekend away this year and the rest of the year will be day trips here and there. That’s all we can afford and are happy with.

UrbanOasis · 14/07/2025 23:09

Yes, usually more than once

SpottyAardvark · 14/07/2025 23:19

Yes, we have several holidays abroad every year. They are a big priority for us, all the more so since Covid. Fortunately we are not tied to travelling in school holidays so we benefit from lower prices for flights & accommodation, and places are less crowded outside peak season.

classiccake · 14/07/2025 23:22

Yes i go a broad a lot and has much as i can.
This year so far ive been away 5 times going again next week.
Tbh im never really in the uk.

Titasaducksarse · 14/07/2025 23:23

Yes. When I turned 18 I promised myself I'd go abroad every year
One year I didn't or couldn't..probably due to pandemic so the next I went more than once.
To be honest nowadays I go abroad about 3 times a year

Lowlaie · 14/07/2025 23:26

Yes, we visit family in the US every year and also do a short haul trip to Europe - the Europe trip has been by train since we had dcs. It's easy as we live 20 mins from a Eurostar terminal and it's a shorter journey than some places in the UK. I like being able to tick off countries visited by the dcs and showing them different places and cultures. We plan to go to other destinations further away when they are older, but for now it's simplest to stick to Europe.

Crushed23 · 15/07/2025 01:55

Multiple times a year. Even through Covid.

In 2020, I went abroad 4 times: January, March (just before France locked down), June and September.

In 2021, I went away in July, September and December.

VenusClapTrap · 15/07/2025 06:45

Yes, I love planes and flying, it’s my guilty pleasure. I find airports quite exciting. I am trying to cut down though, and replace a lot of trips with driving (electric) and ferries.

Mikart · 15/07/2025 06:47

About 6 times but only for short breaks...never 2 weeks

WonderingWanda · 15/07/2025 06:49

Not every year, some years we do one trip, last year we did 2.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 15/07/2025 07:33

Probably once every 4-5 years, but when we go we go big.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 15/07/2025 07:36

No - I haven’t been abroad since 2017. We can’t afford it on top of paying for animal care and each losing income (both self-employed). We tend to do day trips or weekends away where we can take the dog.

MinnieMountain · 15/07/2025 07:38

Generally yes. Ironically given the weather this year, after 2 wet UK holidays last year I vowed we would try to.

This year is France and Austria by train. Next year is Sardinia and Pembrokeshire.

cakeorwine · 15/07/2025 07:41

Yes - but normally we don't fly.

Dead easy to drive to a ferry port and then do something in Europe.

Jeezitneverends · 15/07/2025 07:48

Usually 3-4 times a year, including the covid years

doodleschnoodle · 15/07/2025 07:52

Yes but we don’t fly. We prefer to take our own car and plenty of stuff, so we do Eurostar or ferry. I find flying stressful, you spend hours faffing around either end, have to pay a fortune to take even small amounts of luggage and then have to pay to hire what’s usually a shittier car than your own at the other end. We like to do Eurocamp type stuff where we can take bikes etc and plenty of stuff in our car and roof box!

Jamesblonde2 · 15/07/2025 07:53

Yes, multiple times overseas. Guaranteed good weather and experiencing different culture. We have weekends in the UK too. I find the UK very expensive and it can be very busy over the school holidays, which is when we’re restricted to holidays. Flying does annoy me though, I don’t enjoy public transport.

MumofSpud · 15/07/2025 07:53

Yes - 4/5 times a year. I realise that there are many wonderful places in England / the UK I haven’t been to though.
A few years back I was costing a weekend in Liverpool - I ended up going to Paris as it was cheaper Blush (I would have been getting the train up but it was cheaper to fly to Paris).

I did make it to Liverpool after and it was great!
