Credit card balance transfer

Bit of advice needed. I have around £400 on one card, that card is offering a 0% balance transfer. I have 6.5k on another card (max limit, solicitors fees. ) I was going to transfer the 6.5k so that I wasn't paying interest. But, what happens to the £400 already outstanding? I have no way of paying it off before making the transfer. Shit, I know

Be careful, transfers usually incur a fee.

I've also learnt that you also need to be careful about when the different 0% deals run out, as I just got caught out by this... I opened a card that was 0% for purchases and transfers, but the transfer deal finished earlier than the purchase deal, but any payments towards my balance paid off purchases before the transfer amount (which is how they get you!). This meant that I started getting charged interest on the transfer amount as there was a balance on the card - it was only by clearing the balance that I could prevent further interest being charged on the balance...

If you really want to transfer the £6.5k, then I'd open a new card specifically for that with a long interest-free period for transfers (and, ideally, a low transfer fee)
