Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

1000 replies

purpledaze24 · 14/07/2025 08:40

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

Butter, Monty, Tuppence and Bunny

Definitely dog names.

fffiona · 15/07/2025 07:50

I think it’s interesting how names change. Two of the poshest people I know are called Chantelle and Tiffany - but both are well into their 60s when those names were very uncommon. Agree that most really posh people have ordinary names and weird nicknames though - I know a Mouse, a Boo and a Bobs (female). All adults.

I can identify with this. I'm in my 60's with what used to be an unusual name, that was considered nice. It's now one of the most despised female names around, and I dare not speak it here on MN 😬 I go by a diminutive.

My grandchildren are all on here. Mind you, we are a little bit posh 🙃

The UC boys I know all have very simple names like Henry, James, Charles, George, etc. mostly named after their ancestors, but are generally known by a derivation of their surnames. Boys boarding schools have always used surnames rather than first names, presumable because there are too many Charles or James in each class! These often get shortened/altered by the boys to create the nicknames. It also explains why some surnames have become fashionable as first names.

Surely Marley and Me? As in the dog!

Not Bob Marley and The Wailers?

Sharon or Tracy?
I don't think either would be despised now but they took a bashing in the 80,s

We have a Montgomery at my child’s school but he goes by ‘Monty’. I have never come across anybody else called Montgomery but he really suits his name

Monty Don!

Not north of the border. Their life wouldn't be worth living...😆

Eh? I'm "north of the border" Oliver is a nice, normal name.

Not Sharon or Tracey or Kimberley. A bit more unusual. And I'm not saying, because it's taken me years to learn not to hate it, so I could do without all the "vile" "chav" "airhead" type comments that I'd get here 😞

I’m one of these - there are a few of us about.

Are you a Tarquin or an Araminta? (Don’t answer if you don’t want to!)

Love your name, that, Persephone and Talulah are the secret names I love but didn’t feel able to name my child.

interestingly enough there are several names on here people are suggesting are posh that I consider pretty chavvy!

Harrison would be pretty chavvy here likewise the surname as first name trend (really interesting someone upthread suggested it comes from UK boys public schools!)

And you'd be wrong. Although I was at school with several. I do hate the way it's being used as an insult now.

I'm not attention seeking so if it's guess the name I'm hopping off.

Me too 😂

Not in my experience. It's quite unusual in Scotland. I've only heard of one child in my life being christened Oliver, and that was over 30 years ago.

"It also explains why some surnames have become fashionable as first names"

No it doesn't. Generations of boys were known by their surnames in school, but their offspring were given normal first names. It's a recent trend from the US where the surname in school tradition didn't even exist.

Not every one is like you. There were 2 Olivers in my son's class. I doubt they were the only ones in the school. They would have been born in 1990. There are 2 Olivers in my office. They would have been born in the 2000s.

Saying that " Their life wouldn't be worth living.. says more about you than anyone called Oliver.

Pardon?!

Jane, David and Clare mingling with the posh names.

Why did you say Pardon?! 🤷‍♀️

Araminta1003 · 15/07/2025 09:35

So UC is upper class or upper crust or universal credit now… are people having a laugh?

Marriages are far more mixed these days between social classes and internationally, couple that with the internet, names are no longer strictly about class, except first born boys of the minute upper crust still get the first family name.
Mia, Anastasia, Lucas, Sienna all “European” royal names now.

Interesting! I suppose there are a very small handful born some years so these names aren’t obsolete, just very very rare.

That and the fact darkgreener doesn’t show anything earlier than the mid 90s :( Would love to see the popularity of these names in prior decades.

A friend of a friend at university was called Dickon.

I thought he was rather fabulous.

Makes me think of the Secret Garden! 😀
