Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

Coming to think of it, girls names derived from male names are quite posh sounding, on the whole. Petra, Charlotte, Henrietta, Harriet, Christabel etc.

Surprised JRM does not have a Jacoba/Jacobina. Perhaps reserved for the granddaughters to be. Or Boris a Borisina. Although I think Borisina has become a bit of a spoof name, I have heard it bandied about.

Its what you call "green-eyed monster."

Is it? Punching up is different as I said before.

No-one here is saying ‘Oh Bunty bet she doesn’t even know who her dad is’ ‘Oh Ptolomy will end up in prison lol’

People go make more uncomfortable assumptions about names deemed to sound lower class because those families are under privileged. Privilege can’t guarantee happiness as you’ve detailed before but it sure takes the sting out of misery.

Im sure if JRM was called Kev and had 7 kids it would seem far less aristocratic, similarly if you project BoJos personal life onto a plasterer called Lee who got elected in his local area I doubt that chap would get terribly far in a Conservative leadership coup.

I know a couple of kids called Oliver. Just no...

Eh??

@romatheroamer - thanks re Forsythe Saga. “They always said eye-reen-ey” - I like Irene. Or even Rene. Which I guess is originally French: René

This is kind of true but also I think a little bit because the sorts of names that people have "feminised" tend to be quite posh names to begin with.

I don't feel like a Brucette or a Garyetta would be posh. Think Waynetta ...

NameChange30 · 14/07/2025 18:22

DC2 is starting school in September. There will be 2 Arabellas in the class. Must have been a popular name in 2020/2021.

eyeses · 14/07/2025 18:25

Lavinia would surely be called Lav. I've never met one though.

I once know a Jeanette who used to go on repeatedly about how nette is a toilet up north. She would intentionally mispronounce other people's names to be mean or derogatory, and local place names to try to get a rise, though I think we were all wise to it and just let her do her thing. I think she said she had an English degree but it might have been an exageration.

takealettermsjones · 14/07/2025 18:27

Off the top of my head - Barnaby, Xavier, Peregrine, Patience, Xanthe.

Another one that I find extraordinarily posh, but must be common as it's always suggested on the baby names threads, is "Clementine (nn Clemmie)!"

Miles, jolyon

This is probably the most outing things I've ever put on MN
I have a Jolyon! He's nearly 15 and if I may say, a smashing lad!
He's lived on a council estate all his life and attends the local high school.
He went to primary school with a small girl named Sanchia and about 25 Jaydens!

My 6 1/2 year old grandson is called Rupert. When my daughter and her husband told me they’d chosen that name for the baby boy they were expecting I was horrified, I hated it. But I love his name now, and it suits him.
(They/me are neither posh or wealthy lol)

We have a slightly older Rupert, my DParents and parents in law hated it too. I think they are mostly over it now....

Stephania?? Is that actually a real name or an anal condition?

Somanyquestions12 · 14/07/2025 18:32

Knew of a boy called Willoughby…
on another note a friend of a friend has just named their baby Adonis…

tarheelbaby · 14/07/2025 18:32

I know TAAT are discouraged but there was a thread a week or so ago about things that are ok when you're rich/posh but not ok when you're poor. (e.g. drug/drink addiction; adultery; stealing [pronounced embezzlement...])

I think names might into that category somewhat. There are some names which the richest and poorest love and you can't tell until you meet the person... James Stuart (King of Scotland or scabby scrounger?)...

transformandriseup · 14/07/2025 18:34

Stephania is the Italian version of Stephanie.

@Calliopespa I worked with an Italian woman called Stephania many years ago

Oh that's just cruel.

I'm all for freedom and taste, but you have to be sensible. Its like calling a baby girl Femme-Fatale.

Jago isn’t necessarily posh but Cornish. Allegedly the same root as Diego, a result of Cornish & Spanish fishermen meeting.

Yes Cornish for Jacob. Jowan (John) is another popular Cornish name.

Siblings Apollo and Athena. Not posh folk at all but seem to aspire to be. Old money friends have more classic names, Jonathon, Anna etc.
