Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

OP posts:

Tarquin Persephone. Both dire unless you're landed gentry. Venetia - I quite like this one. Algernon. Eek awful. There's an Atticus in Downton abbey.

I think there is a difference from aristocratic and literary middle upper class.

Aristocratic names are just regular names but it’s the money that gives it the power. My Dad is William and my brother is Hugh- but they are both names after grandfathers who were Welsh miners.

Atticus, Tarquin etc…. are more like the names you would find in books about posh people rather than actual posh people.

I’m in Liverpool, tonnes of Arabellas round here! So wouldn’t say it was posh anymore

I'm not sure Arabella is posh anymore but might be because the ones I know aren't posh and Bella is pretty common (as in there are lots rather than insulting common before anyone comes for me!)

Ive always thought Tarquin sounds posh, and Jonty

St John, Octavia, Rupert

One of my oldest friends is called St John. We met at our Comprehensive school on a council estate. His mum was the school cleaner and he lives in a static caravan now. Absolutely lovely bloke but posh isn't always posh.

OP how would you feel if you saw a thread about "chav" names? Cos they are stereotypical "posh" names they are fair game? Pretty sure you wouldn't be happy if I said "let's hear the chaviest names at a school"?

They’re not even posh.

Jerseycreamtea · 14/07/2025 09:36

Portia
Rafe but spelt Ralph so not posh at all!

reinforcementz · 14/07/2025 09:37

Honestly, the most UC people I know named their children entirely ordinary things that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow on Mn. I know two ‘Honorables’ (I mean, they don’t use it, but they’re technically entitled to as the daughter and younger son of (I think) a viscount and an earl), and they’re called Martha and Anthony.

The children of the most UC people I know of my generation (children now aged between early teens and mid-20s) are called things like Mimi, Tobias, Mary, Elodie and Max.

I read this as "the most Universal Credit people I know" so that's where I'm at

Hoppinggreen · 14/07/2025 09:37

Atticus
Having said that both my 2 were at Private school and most of the kids had pretty normal names. No "yooneek" ones though

Fox and Moss are the 2 poshest I ever met 😂

I LOVE the name Moss.

Didn’t have a boy though, unfortunately

dontcomeatme · 14/07/2025 09:40

I heard a dad shout Ottillie the other day, I'd actually never heard it before and I immediately thought posh! Although, I have a Henry and an Edward, everyone says they're very posh names 🤔 we are definitely not posh haha

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/07/2025 08:55

Cordelia, Arora, Taliesin, jemima and Nathaniel.

Taliesin isn’t posh, it’s an ordinary if slightly poncey Welsh name.
