Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

In Tess, it's Angel Clare.

Oh yes. I knew there was an unusual man’s name in that book.

1000DayChallenge · 14/07/2025 16:18

Cuthbert is posh but very cute

eyeses · 14/07/2025 16:19

I would avoid Lettice because of wet lettuce, and also for the same reason I avoided William and John Thomas and Richard, which are all a million times nicer than Lettice.

A lot of these names are simply from different countries and so sound unusual or exotic here. Alternatively they were popular 4 generations ago so are coming back, but just sound grannyish to us oldies only 3 generations from them. I had a great aunt Edith and was surprised to see it mentioned. Then again there are people called Maud again and I just hear/feel maudlin.

Actually on the right child it would be cute.

The only Cuthbert I knew was an anglican clergyman with bad breath and warts on his face.

But it goes to show ... its the wearer that make or breaks it.

The only names I really don't like are the more modern (say, 1970s onwards, "creations") or place names, with the possible exception of Georgia, which I can tolerate.

Damson?

Not Victoria, not Damson. Looking for a name from which the nn Plum is derived.

Florian is v popular in Germany/Austria

Posh names for boys that I quite like are: Gawain (the green knight), Gulliver, Magnus.

I have a posh and slightly frilly name that has not been mentioned because nobody with any sense would use it. I would have much preferred to have been Susan or Angela.

"Posh" names for girls nowadays, I'm not sure but feel Caroline is due a come back, Caro?

Cordelia, Arora, Taliesin, jemima and Nathaniel.

Taliesin isn’t posh, it’s Welsh

I'm going to guess Penelope?

Agree. And names like Aurelien and Antione are just French, not really posh.

summertimeinLondon · 14/07/2025 16:26

Hector and Hebe.

Not for Plum and not my name. I quite like Penelope.

Can I just weigh in with Prunella?

YES!!! An elderly Plum!

Spaghettihair · 14/07/2025 16:27

It’s not posh to use a literary or classical reference unless you’ve read the book imho. There would be fewer Lavinias if Titus Andronicus was more popular- though that said there’s a tonne of Khaleesis and one assumes they’ve watched the violent objectification at the start of GoT and thought ‘perfect for my baby’

LoyalMember · 14/07/2025 16:27

I know a couple of kids called Oliver. Just no...

eyeses · 14/07/2025 16:29

😂
They say to pick a name for the child or adult not the baby, but that's quite a wrinkly name.

I do too actually. I also like Penny for Persephone!

OP how would you feel if you saw a thread about "chav" names? Cos they are stereotypical "posh" names they are fair game? Pretty sure you wouldn't be happy if I said "let's hear the chaviest names at a school"?

That's different. A thread about "posh" names is classism, but it's classism against people in higher classes which means that it's OK.

Chavs are not a social class, and have nothing to do with class. Most chavs have more money than I do. Chavs are people who adhere to a specific style and culture, more akin to goths.

But why is it ok?

As a child its not nice being the posh kid any more than it is being the opposite.

I realise there may be some advantages - or perceived advantages - but being pigeon-holed by your background is never nice.

shuggles · 14/07/2025 16:33

@Calliopespa If you feel distraught about people saying mean things about you because of your social class, then I will be more than happy to take some of your money off you.

That will reduce your social standing and then you will feel happy that people aren't using mean words anymore.

ForTheLoveOfJackDaniels · 14/07/2025 16:33

Constance and Cordelia.

My only association with the name Marley is that he was Dead by the start of 'A Christmas Carol'.

Surely Marley and Me? As in the dog!
