Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

1000 replies

purpledaze24 · 14/07/2025 08:40

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

Cornelius

Kenneth

Cornelius where I'm from is a very ordinary rural old man name, generally abbreviated to Con, but occasionally 'Neelus'.

They're not posh, just the Nouveau riche.

The poshest names I've heard are the Royals. Elizabeth, Alexandra, Victoria, Alice, George, Louis, William, Henry, Edward, Charles.

Names like Tarquin arent posh theyre stupid.

I'm not sure that's true actually. Henrietta and Arabella are both royal names, you just need a slightly more in depth knowledge of history. Henrietta of France was Queen consort (and her daughter was Henrietta of England if you aren't accepting forrin as posh). Lady Arabella Stuart was of the Stuart line, was Duchess of Somerset and came within a whisker of being Elizabeth I's successor to the throne.

If you are equating British royal with posh, its true that with Jago and Tarquin you've got me, though I guess Tarquin is designed to demonstrate familiarity with classical history. Thought I still don't really see Jago as posh. Wasn't it from Dr Who?

I have known very posh children, brothers who were called Archie and Rupert. I have not met one but have heard of one or two called Marmaduke. I met little girl called Shanice (pronounced Shah-neece). My cousin is called Joscelin (boy), the whole family bar his parents are taking bets on how long it will take him to ask to be called by his middle name, Alexander. Another cousin (on the rich side of the family) is called Tomohisa, his mother is half Japanese, his sister is called Ariana. They both go to posh schools and Ariana's friends are Selena and Josalyn (girl). My Mum taught a very highly strung girl called Tasia (pronounced Tay-see-ah) and a Tabitha.

My friend has Horris and Ethel, 5 and 3 respectively. I met a Lydia the other day, about 14 and thought it was lovely

Surely its spelt Horace? Both very old historic names and popular in the late 1800's. My DH had a great aunt Ethel who lived in the East End - and this was also the name of one of the original characters on Eastenders.

Calliopespa · 14/07/2025 11:53

I would say only the poshest families would have the gumption to introduce their sprog to the world as Peregrine or Montague.

Girls: Flavia, Tacita, Minty, Olympia, Euthymia

Euthymia, I think you meant Euphemia. The former is a mental heath term interchangeable with euthymic meaning of neutral mood.

Wasn't the Stuart one Arbella rather than Arabella? Bess of Hardwick's daughter? Don't think I've ever met another Arbella, plenty of Arabella's though.

Mind you, with the reading comprehension of many people, any girl named Arbella is going to get that second A added into her name anyway.

I know a Cornelius from school. He wanted to be known as Neil and was mortified when his mum called him by his full Sunday name in front of a girl he fancied.

Taliesin isn’t posh, it’s an ordinary if slightly poncey Welsh name.

Funnily enough I live in Wales but the only Taliesin I know is from the North West of England. It does sound like a posh name in their setting imo.

I know multiples of Ottilie, Hugo and Rupert which used to be posh but now are being used by commoners.

I think it actually differed with the sources - you know the way that spelling was a bit hit and miss back then! But yes, she is often referred to as Arbella but that form seems not to have passed forward.

I believe it is originally Scottish - and you can hear the extra "a" if you say Arbella with a Scottish accent!

NewPersonHere · 14/07/2025 11:58

Good grief there are a lot of very pretentious names here! Not calling any of them out, but it makes me want a definition of posh. Wealthy? Aristocratic? Socially upwardly mobile?

Boys called Jocelyn (var.) can be known as Joss, eg Joss Ackland.
