Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

Crispin.

And maybe Casper. That sounds quite well-to-do to me.

Rupert
Cecilia
Lettice (I can’t imagine one on a council estate)
Octavia
Ophelia
Benedict
Cornelia
Cornelius

I like some posh names (even though I’m not posh).

So many Ophelias around! All known as "Phi" said like "Fi" for Fiona!

softlyfallsthesnow · 14/07/2025 10:50

There was a Halcyon in The Times births column last week. Not many of those around. I hope he's known as Hal by the time he gets to school.
More try-hard than posh though.

Really posh people all have quite dull names like Charles, Elizabeth, Henry, Caroline and George. But they go by their inexplicably stupid nicknames from babyhood like:

Baffy, Tonto, Musher, Wiggy and Roops

Listen out for it next time you are at the Polo or Henley. Or read some PG Wodehouse!

😁 that has made me laugh.

diddl · 14/07/2025 10:50

I don't know anyone called Lettice & always thought it was pronounced like the beginning of Letitia.

PauliString · 14/07/2025 10:50

I found a letter from an old school friend who went to Cheltenham Ladies College after a few years at our state school:

"... then Solange went after Mireille with the dissecting scissors and gave her a mullet..."

Arabella… Bijou…ottilie…hector

My cat is called Hector and he is not posh.

If people want to hear weird old names, Spain has a few. Most of them are no longer popular with one exception, Dolores.

Socorro (SOS/Help)
Dolores (Pains)
Consuelo (Comfort)
Remedios (Health remedies)
Soledad (Solitude)

😀

Actually Fiona sounds quite posh too. I really like it but you don’t see kids called it now (or I don’t).

I prefer Fiona to Ophelia!

How can you tell?

Platosrevenge · 14/07/2025 10:53

It’s weird how double barrelled names just aren’t posh anymore.

ScoobyDoesnt · 14/07/2025 10:54

There was a Ptolemy at DS' school (bog standard CofE school). Poor child!

Probably only eats tinned cat food

Lidlisthebusiness · 14/07/2025 10:55

I really like a lot of the names mentioned, and had them on my name lists for all of my children. Not because I'm posh, but because I like names that are a bit different.

My newest babies name is on here a few times and I had no idea it was considered posh, I've loved it for years but my husband always vetoed it but we couldn't find anything as good this time.

A PP also mentioned Falcon (for Scott), this is the only one on here that I know of in real life.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 14/07/2025 10:55

I always think people who shorten Victoria to Tori rather than Vicky must be posh.

My DS has a friend called Kasper, think it’s a polish name.

Howtotrainarabbit · 14/07/2025 10:55

Barnaby
Edith - is that posh?

I don't think it means anything any more as some people pick names thinking they are posh or different and then there are loads of them!

Cordelia, Rupert and Alberta

I would have thought Alberta is a very provincial name (but better than calling her British Columbia I guess…)

Bunnycat101 · 14/07/2025 10:57

In reality, if you take a look at the average prep school class list, they’re not going to be all the stereotypically ‘posh’ sounding ones. There will be a good chunk of the typical Olivia, Isabella, poppy etc.

The richest/old money people I knew at university were Kate (daughter of aristo), William and Thomas.

Araminta

This! This is mine along with Cordelia and Candida!

spoonbillstretford · 14/07/2025 10:59

I live in quite a posh area in the SE of England though come from a working class background in Manchester.

Used to be in a local running group at one time when I was less familiar with the area and one of them had a son called Horatio. I'm afraid I chuckled out loud when she said it as I thought it was a family nickname.

Katbum · 14/07/2025 10:59

Opheilia and Genevive

REP22 · 14/07/2025 10:59

I used to work at a very posh boarding school. Many and varied names - but one poor s~d rejoiced in the (first) name of Wurlitzer. Apparently one had "been involved in his conception" (according to father - classy). I think he preferred to be called "Will". He was a nice lad.
