Do You Enjoy BBQs?

My family were never really into BBQs when I was growing up, although I always enjoyed barbecued food if I had it. DH & I only bought a BBQ when we moved out of his house into our own ( we’d been together 7 years by then) and it only got used for us, not for entertaining. We never get invited to BBQs either. We moved again to a house with a smaller garden. The BBQ got left out all winter & is really rusty, although it works fine. Again, it’s very rarely used. We didn’t cook anything on it last year & probably won’t during this heatwave, even though it is nice to eat al fresco. DH says he just can’t be doing with the faff & the waiting around. How about you guys?

Rarely. We quite like our own because we we don’t basically attempt to eat a fortnight’s meat consumption in one meal and we BBQ vegetables too but we live somewhere where cooking over charcoal is common and perfected in restaurants and it’s probably cheaper and better to go there, especially for fish or chicken. I did a seafood bbq once and it cost me a fortune in raw materials and it was no nicer than getting it in a restaurant and not much cheaper. I also had to clean the grill!

Yes I do - same as pp, I make sure I just pick one protein to eat and then enjoy the bbq vegetable skewers, salads and sides.

When I was a child we didn’t have a bbq for several years - my mum used to build one with bricks and using a large grille that she upcycled. It was the best fun building it (making sure you left space for venting etc). After a while mum and dad invested in a basic little charcoal bbq but I never felt it was as good (or as much fun).

I have a BBQ outside my kitchen door and use it at least 4 x a week on the summer. Love it as the kitchen doesn't get hot.

Yes I do.

minnienono · 14/07/2025 07:56

I don’t enjoy cleaning up the BBQ afterwards nor cooking on inferior cooking equipment to my rather nice range cooker. I’ve hosted many an outdoor gathering but served up food cooked inside!

TizerorFizz · 14/07/2025 07:59

We use ours around once a week/2 weeks in summer sometimes in winter too. Big steaks are great on it and we use it for lots of other food. I have a veg tray for bbq veg and we invite friends round too. We have it handy on the patio and it’s a fairly substantial one and has no rust on it. It’s not a cheap one but we do use it.

Nourishinghandcream · 14/07/2025 07:59

No, we never BBQ nowadays.

Used to BBQ when camping (and enjoyed it) but have never done it at home and don't carry one in our Moho.
TBH eating outdoors is not something that either my OH or I want to do.

I'd don't clean the BBQ ,there's no need . I just keep it burning for 10 mins when I've finished and let it cool and then use the brush on it to scrape the ash away.

When I was a child, we lived in a country with a strong barbecue culture, and it was simply normal. My father was always a very keen barbecuer, and had a proper brick-built barbecue that was used a great deal in the summer. I hate barbecuing myself - I have one because the men of the family are keen, and I’m happy to prepare the stuff if they cook it. If I have to do it, it goes in the oven - why would I have two perfectly good ovens to stand in the garden getting hot and smoky?

StrawberryCranberry · 14/07/2025 08:01

We never use the BBQ for just a family meal - I don't know why really. We invite friends for a BBQ quite often though. It's good if you're catering for lots of people.

WhistlingStraits · 14/07/2025 08:01

We had 2 this weekend alone. We have a proper barbecue, if we were just cooking on gas outside, I wouldn’t bother.

dementedpixie · 14/07/2025 08:02

I like it better now we have a gas one so there's less waiting about for it to heat. Dh does the prep and cooking so it's a win for me!

Food is cooked outside and then we eat at the table indoors

Spiderhelp · 14/07/2025 08:03

Occasionally yes. Definitely not regularly. I know this is a cook issue, but the lack of variety and burnt bits become grim.

FrenchandSaunders · 14/07/2025 08:05

No because DH burns everything and it’s almost inedible.

We eat outside a lot in the summer, but we cook indoors.

SarfLondonLad · 14/07/2025 08:13

No. Can't abide them. We have "garden parties". Same as a bbq but you cook the food in the kitchen and bring it out.

Floranan · 14/07/2025 08:15

DH loves a bbq would have one everyday, I personally don’t like the fact that’s it’s normally heavy meat based. I also have ibs which means I’m on a very restricted diet which includes no processed meat and as DH insists a bbq is sausage and burgers with chicken thighs/drumsticks (which I hate because of the bones) I can honestly say bbq is a waste of time for me.

i have finally got him into cooking whole chickens on to rotisserie which we will all eat (DD is like me about meat) but this weekend he insisted on cooking a joint of pork - I don’t eat pork at all in any shape or form. DD not keen so he was then fed up when it wasn’t enjoyed - I did warn him to invite the DS’s and families over.

anyway after all that - the best thing ever in my book was my birthday present from my son last year - an ooni pizza oven ! It’s not just for pizza, last week I cooked lamb chops ( and a sausage for DH ) in the sizzler pan whilst they “rested” I popped some new potatoes into the sizzler pan they were wonderful, the whole thing took 10 minutes to cook and was lovely with a nice salad

Floranan · 14/07/2025 08:16

That said, the week before I cooked a leg of lamb on the bbq

Love your dog looking hopeful 😂

Grainsandgains · 14/07/2025 08:22

I am known to bbq even in February 😂
It's no more faff than cooking the same meal inside imho

Bananacoffee · 14/07/2025 08:25

I love them! We dont have them often now as our garden is so close to the neighbours and they spend a lot of time outside in the summer (they have never moaned about bbq smoke but mindful that id find it annoying too); but if we are having a big get together and the weather is decent invariably it'll be a bbq. We used to do them loads in the summer when we had a more secluded garden as well, once the set up is sorted doesn't take too much effort and doesnt have to be a meat fest- chicken, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, skewers...loads of stuff!

CozyCoupe · 14/07/2025 08:29

We have a decent gas bbq and use it all the time. We did breakfast and tea on it in both Saturday and Sunday. Its no more faff than cooking the same meal inside.

TeapotTallulah · 14/07/2025 08:31

I don’t like eating outside - so no!

Hair in my mouth, bugs, food going cold too fast. Not for me 😬

pambeesleyhalpert · 14/07/2025 08:32

It depends who’s doing it. My husband is a brilliant BBQer so the food is always amazing

Thingamebobwotsit · 14/07/2025 08:32

@Floranan is the rotisserie any good? Is it part of your BBQ or separate? We BBQ occasionally but love eating outdoors and I have been eyeing up whether to invest in a rotisserie or an Ooni...

Blarn · 14/07/2025 08:35

Very rarely. One or two nice ones I remember was when they had lots of warm dishes like vegetable couscous not done on the bbq and they were just lovely and relaxed help yourself type of hosts. I hate the ones (probably from the ones my parents did and it usually ended in argument!) where you are handed a sad sausage in a dry bun and have to try and eat salad and a chicken leg from a paper plate on your lap. There are wasps and jokes about things being burnt and raw at the same time and everyone looks stressed!
