Do You Enjoy BBQs?

My family were never really into BBQs when I was growing up, although I always enjoyed barbecued food if I had it. DH & I only bought a BBQ when we moved out of his house into our own ( we’d been together 7 years by then) and it only got used for us, not for entertaining. We never get invited to BBQs either. We moved again to a house with a smaller garden. The BBQ got left out all winter & is really rusty, although it works fine. Again, it’s very rarely used. We didn’t cook anything on it last year & probably won’t during this heatwave, even though it is nice to eat al fresco. DH says he just can’t be doing with the faff & the waiting around. How about you guys?

I really like barbecues - I like meat and salads! I have two extremes of barbecues - bung it on meat with a greek or other salad, or an array of ottolenghi type grills and salads. Usually just with family. It's so nice. I'd love a posh barbecue system.

I cba with picnics, mind - completely overrated.

Bought a Gas weber BBQ in 2004, and use it all year round for cooking steaks, sausages etc. at least one a week.

Still looks good after 21 years in the garden without a cover on it.

RunningJo · 14/07/2025 08:44

Love a bbq. We use ours every weekend in the summer, and occasionally in the week too.

Another one who hates eating outside. Plus, as a vegetarian, I don't really see the point of barbecues so I'd rather not bother.

We splashed out and bought a gas Weber last year ,it's amazing! There is such a difference between cooking on a cheaper gas one and a Weber, food tastes amazing.

We only have a small garden so there isn't space for a big one, but we have a Cobb oven that we originally bought for camping, put it on a table on the patio and use it regularly in the summer, it's really easy to light, minimal smoke (we are close to neighbours so this matters) and you can fit enough food for a family of four on it. We also have a table top pizza oven, we use that if we have people round, again it takes up little space and not too much smoke, it's easier for a crowd because the pizzas cook in about a minute.

We eat pretty well all our meals outside in summer, our kitchen opens up onto the patio, so it's very easy to take food outside. I actually can't remember when I last ate inside as the weather has been dry for so long.

We love them, we had 2 BBQs at home this weekend and one at a friend's house too. We just have meat and salad and/or sweet potato also cooked on the BBQ.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 14/07/2025 09:44

Never. I'm vegetarian so they're a waste of time. It's either a disintegrating bean burger or a half cooked veg kebab.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/07/2025 10:22

Love a bbq, I don’t do picky bbqs anymore though, I don’t think you need to eat 7 types of meat cooked over coal to class as a bbq though!

we have things like pork belly, pulled bork, roast chicken, char Sui, tikka, shawarma etc.

we’ve had bbq every night since it’s been hot.

Also love grilled pineapple for desert.

my friends are also fab bbq people, lots of Vietnam and Thai stuff gets cooked. We do have burgers but they are the main event, not a random thing to go with something else.

namestealer · 14/07/2025 14:37

We have a small one and used to use it a lot just for the two of us and very occasionally to entertain, now we have young kids it just seems like additional stress having them around an open fire so we don't bother.

@DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen
We have a gas Weber too. I’m always happy with what we cook. Hot and tasty. When friends are round we cook to order. So no one gets food that’s hanging around and tepid. It’s always safely cooked and we do great fish and vegetarian options. It’s like most forms of cooking, you have to get your act together on timings and know what you cook is tasty. We like different salads and I’d be surprised if anyone thought they were not very good.

We also have a large garden so it’s pleasant to cook and eat outside.

MissyB1 · 14/07/2025 15:41

Yrs but im married to a South African, they call it a braai, cooking outside is a basic life skill for him. We braai all year round, strictly only on coals though, he thinks a gas braai is a travesty 😂
Doesn't have to be all meat, he cooks fish/prawns/veggie kebabs, even pizzas.

330ml · 14/07/2025 15:48

Yes, we have them year round. Outdoors when the weather is fine and indoors when it isn’t. We have an old house with a massive fireplace.

Ewww no for me.. tepid/cold charred meat and salad

If your meat is tepid, cold or charred, you are doing it wrong. If your salad is tepid, or charred, you are doing it really wrong.

afaloren · 14/07/2025 15:54

When DH barbecues at home I don’t particularly enjoy it because the food tastes burnt. I don’t think it is, but that’s how it tastes to me. It’s a little charcoal barbecue.

When I’m at my cousin’s house she has a gas barbecue and I do enjoy that. She’s an incredible cook though.

DryDay · 14/07/2025 15:54

We have a good gas bbq and we just use it an an outdoor cooker. We’ll use it at least 1-2 times pw during the warm/ dry weather.

We’ll be cooking some chicken thigh fillets and thick courgette slices on it this evening to have with some quinoa and I’ll make a nice dressing to drizzle over it all: olive oil, juice/zest lemon, honey, garlic, sweet paprika, tahini, fresh dill.

We use it to cook when we have friends over too, but in the same way. We don’t ever cook mountains of kebabs/ burgers/sausages all together.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 14/07/2025 15:56

I could see myself doing it but I don’t as yet. And my experience of others’ BBQs is the “wait two hours, get handed dry roll with charred burger and ketchup” variety. If we entertain outside it’s with food cooked inside. Or ordered in.

amicisimma · 14/07/2025 15:59

I hate them.

At friends/relatives all around the world I've been told 'We're having a BBQ. My husband/brother/father/uncle/grandad does the best. It definitely won't be burnt on the outside and raw in the middle'.

Off we go, long wait, covered in smoke and the smell of burnt fat and I'm handed a glass, a knife, fork and napkin, then, to hold in my third hand (?) a plate of meat. I find a way to try to eat it and ... burnt on the outside, raw in the middle. Every. Single. Time.

HiRen · 14/07/2025 16:01

My in laws have a gas one. They also put foil on the grilles before cooking. I just don’t see the point. Especially when it’s boiling hot and you have to stand next to a boiling hot grill Confused

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 14/07/2025 16:02

Since we got a gas BBQ, yes, it’s great.

Disturbia81 · 14/07/2025 16:04

Rarely, it’s a treat maybe once a year.

Whatshesaid96 · 14/07/2025 16:10

Not overly fussed as a vegetarian. Halloumi is nice a little chargrilled but I can take it or leave it. DS isn't a massive meat eater so it would mostly be for DD and DH really. If I'm hosting in the summer I much prefer just oven cooking a load of homemade pizzas with a variety of salads and dips.
