I took animal studies in college so…

No - it's more that the male can't easily get his pelvis very close to the female's pelvis. Human males only need a relatively short penis because the arrangement of hip and leg bone and joint and musculature of males and females all allow a very close coupling but if you're an armadillo it's a lot trickier. Only the very tip of that will get inside.
