OMG the dyson fan is useless!!

It’s 30.4C in our room.

I have a Dyson humidifier with fan. It cost c. £400. I don’t need the humidifier although tbf its only 39% humidifity.

The fan is so rubbish!! It has a ridiculous O shape. If the bottom of the O is pointing at you, you get some air. If it’s the middle, NOTHING. There’s a huge hole where NO AIR COMES OUT. Top, very little.

You can’t adjust the height, I’ve had to bring in an office chair and lower it to the height of the bed

It doesn’t rotate, disperse the air as per the O comment above, so even with the office chair solution my face is cool and my feet are boiling.

It has no timers and is noisy, I can’t tell if when to turn off so will be waking up every 30 mins with the noise.

I use the fan to stop the mosquitoes. Countryside here near water we have loads. So with this set up my Face is fine and legs get bitten.

meanshile, my kids are happily sleeping with a £60 standing fan from Amazon. It’s on high. At the right height. Fans from the whole face … not the edges with a massive gap. It rotates. so covers whole room. And it’s on a timer to turn off after midnight when they’ll be fast asleep and don’t need the loud noise waking them.

just saying. Don’t buy one,

what else should I avoid??

.

Go out to b&q and buy one of their really noisy but highly effective mega fans. Buy earplugs, save yourself £350. Return the Dyson unit because it’s not as described.

Vanessashanessajenkins2 · 11/07/2025 23:08

Was literally about to buy one tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up. Ill go to b&q

Testerical · 11/07/2025 23:08

Mosquitos don’t like mega fans. They’re light and if you point the fan directly at your exposed skin… job done. Plus, many people find the noise of fans quite soporific.

I’ve got a Dyson fan and it’s excellent. Have you got it set right?

Extravirginolive · 11/07/2025 23:09

There's an app which you can use for timing etc.

The night mode can be set to go off using the app.

This is exactly it! We have a couple of cheapies from Amazon and they are amazing. Pedestal fans.

Sadly I’ve had the Dyson for a couple of years, bought it as a humidifier for winter (jury is out on how well it works…) so I can’t return it.

But IT IS NOT A FAN AS WE KNOW IT

Thanks op, really glad I didn't buy one now, I got a Meaco one instead and its fab if you're looking for a recommendation.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/07/2025 23:11

sorry if being thick

why did you buy the humidifier? X post - oh okay, for winter. But it seems like it would make summer worse.

I have a Dyson fan in the big O shape. I had vouchers so didn't pay a lot but it's good. I now have a portable air con unit which is obviously better. But isn't the thing you bought the cost of two or three portable aircon units?

It’s on 10

I cant adjust the height

It doesn’t rotate

No air comes out of the O (edges only… pointing directly forwards so covers v little area)

What am I missing, what does the app do??

Get yourself a Shark fan, best thing ever.
Quiet, timer, cordless, can be a desk top one or a stand. Seem pricey, around £200 but worth every penny.

JDM625 · 11/07/2025 23:13

I researched the dyson fans in depth last year. Multiple reviews said that the air output from them was poor in comparison to a regular fan with the same wattage- if not less wattage!

FYI-Lidl have fans on sale currently and a regular, pedestal fan is £15! There dyson knock off is £70.

Industrial fan fan here - around £50 and although noisy and not perfect, the best ive managed to find xx

FiercelyFree · 11/07/2025 23:14

Meaco are brilliant at around £80, oscillates up and down, side to side has 10 settings, timer, eco setting, it's quiet and has a remote control.

It was maybe £400 ish about four years ago.

I’ve never really needed the fan much as it’s so rarely that hot at night.

in winter we have the heating on lots so the air is dry.

not worth buying a portable aircon unit (several hundred each feom
JL…?)… too big, barely needed as UK doesn’t have warm nights in summer typically, and dog ugly out the window!!

LF11 · 11/07/2025 23:16

I’ve got a Dyson fan on now, it’s incredible, like having air con

Blimey is this the app? Mine is old so just the remote. It's great and can work without being buffeted, no noise and different angles + oscillation. Gave it to mum and she's well chuffed.

This is why we need to laughing emoji back 😂

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 11/07/2025 23:20

We have two Dyson fans, the first one pure cool and it does rotate (discontinued now) it’s ok but not great. We also have the one you described and it’s absolutely rubbish. Both kids currently have their £30 fans we brought online which are way better. Parents have a shark and it seems really good, they love it.

Goes to show doesn’t it… it’s not all about the brand!

I’m such a sucker for “second most expensive option”. Useless. But what does Dyson care?
