Tooth removal recovery

Hi guys, I'm booked in to get my tooth removed on Tuesday, he’s also said he needs to divide the tooth into sections before removing it. I’m getting it done under local anaesthetic. I’m just very worried as it’s my sons nursery graduation the day after and I want to attend it and really be able to enjoy it as I’m so proud of him as he is autistic and I didn’t think he would ever get chance to do something like this as initially getting him to nursery in the past was difficult. Does anybody have any experience with something similar who can advise me what I’m going to be like the next day?
thanks in advance

I had this done and went back to work straight afterwards. Slightly uncomfortable the next day but no other issues.

I had it done and booked the next day off work (I had a general anaesthetic because of position of tooth). Was actually fine next day and could have worked. Surgeon did divide the tooth. I took 2 paracetamol every 4 h and 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours (so 2 tablets every 2 hours staggered, up to max daily dose) which kept the pain completely under control. Was just a little sore.

Hope all goes well, and enjoy your little boy's day!

Thanks so much, I’m allergic to all anti inflammatorys so worried about covering the pain also :(

Ah that's a pain (sorry for the pun). Paracetamol and a cold compress then? Dentist might be able to advise re other pain relief

I had a wisdom and another tooth removed at our local hospital. It was easily the least painful extraction I've ever experienced. Very little blood loss and no after pain or issues.

I was fine the next day. Cold compress and keep on top of the painkillers.

I had a tooth out yesterday on my lunch break and went back to work after. I couldn’t really talk well so cancelled some calls. Was out for dinner at night. I took 2 paracetamol when I got home from dentist and 2 before bed. Don’t need any today. I’m rinsing with salt water every 3 hours and straight after food

Pivilepivling · 11/07/2025 19:25

You’ll be fine, it’s nothing to worry about.

top jaw or bottom jaw? There is a difference in pain I believe(according to my sister)! One of my top teeth split, she couldn’t get the root out when she tried to pull it under local, tooth snapped off. Ended up going into to have the root removed and opted for general (though it’s not proper general anaesthetic!) cause I’m a wuss. Recover remarkably easy and pain free. Just ensure you follow the instructions given to you so you avoid the clot falling out and resulting in the painful dry socket.

Top tooth right at the back the last molar but not the wisdom tooth, have to have it separated into 3 too which is freaking me out a bit :(

I had mine put under sedation last year. It had to come out in sections.
I was fine after. Never needed any painkillers. He did put a stitch in which I think helped prevent dry socket.

DiscoBob · 11/07/2025 19:29

Everyone I know who's had it done was fine the next day. My 86 yo mum was able to eat Nandos the day after. Some people get bruising around the mouth on their face though.
If you take pain relief and don't chew on that side there's no reason why you should feel incapacitated at all really.

TomatoSandwiches · 11/07/2025 19:30

Perhaps a short course of cocodamol? Paracetamol ans codeine if you can't have anti inflammatories?

Upper molars are generally considered easier to extract I believe.

ArcticBells · 11/07/2025 19:32

I had this done in my lunch hour. The tooth shattered with slight pressure so not easy to get out but I was fine. Please don’t listen to any horror stories as it’s not bad at all. Just be sure to follow the instructions for after care as so important not to get dry socket.

LydiaBucket · 11/07/2025 19:32

Dental nurse here, you’ll likely be absolutely fine!, sectioning the roots makes it more complex for the dentist but shouldn’t affect recovery, most people ar back to normal within hours. Your mouth heals quickly!

ArcticBells · 11/07/2025 19:32

I didn’t need painkillers. It was a bottom big molar

Thankyou so much, is it normal to be kept awake for sectioning too? Most people are saying they was under general so now I’m scared
