Holiday room mess up!

On holiday in Greece with DH and our teens DD18 and DS17. When we booked we specifically searched for a place with 2 separate bedrooms. We found a self catering hotel apartment - 2 bedrooms (1 x twin, 1 x double) with a separate living room/kitchenette.
On arrival we were told we’d been “upgraded” only to be dropped at the room and find it’s 1 bedroom with 2 single sofa beds in the living room/kitchenette.
We went back to reception to be told the new room is superior and newer. We specifically wanted 2 bedrooms with the separate living room/kitchenette so we asked to have what we booked. Apparently there is not one available.
It seems they overbook the 2 bedrooms then try to “upgrade” you to a 1 bedroom with put you ups.
The head receptionist isn’t here until 9pm but we’ve been told there’s not a 2 bedroom to move us to. It’s a small hotel.
We booked with a reputable well known tour operator. They’re investigating but have also been told by hotel no one available to speak until 9pm.
I don’t want to overreact but we have no separate living areas. The teens and their luggage are in the living room. DD has ADHD and doesn’t sleep great so we won’t be able to get a cup of tea/breakfast etc until they’re awake each day.
I don’t even know what option we have but to put up with it! Had a horrible few months and I know there’s worse things and that this is minor for 14 days.
Realistically what can the tour operator do when in reality we have enough beds to sleep on and the hotel is saying they don’t have a spare 2 bedroom for us? I just feel what we have is not what we paid for. I’m not after money.
I think I just needed to vent a bit. I’m probably tired, up since 2.30am. I’m irritated too that they tried to tell us it was an upgrade!

What a disappointment, pleased you should be allocated the room you paid for this morning, but it has ruined the first night of your trip. You should be compensated for this. Hopefully the rest of your holiday will be hassle free so you can relax.

whynotmereally · 11/07/2025 06:30

Fingers crossed for a better result tomorrow

Selfsetfree · 11/07/2025 06:32

If they don’t have room availability tui should be finding you another hotel. I hope it works out today. Very cheeky of the hotel to say it’s an upgrade but smaller!

I’m waiting to hear from them but I don’t actually think in practical terms they can fix it if there’s not a 2 bedroom available.

If the double in the apartment they've given you can't be turned into a twin then they need to give you another twin room. Otherwise they need to give you another double room. If it can be turned into a twin then the kids stay there and you and DH have the new double.

Absolutely stand your ground on this op!

HappiestSleeping · 11/07/2025 06:40

I've had a similar situation. I felt sorry for the operator rep as it was the hotel and not the operator, however I just said that they could either give us what we booked, or fly us home and bring us back when they could give us what we booked. The hotel mysteriously found a 'sister hotel' that had what we needed so we ended up there.

Good luck @MummyChocolateMonster , let us know what happens.

BuildbyNumbere · 11/07/2025 06:45

If you can manage then stay but you should 100% ask for a refund / compensation for the downgrade and stress of having to manage. Or you can ask them to move you to another hotel, if there is one. Ask if they have a 2 bed coming free anytime soon, someone may check out in a few days.

Foodylicious · 11/07/2025 06:47

Hope you had a good night OP and things are sorted in the morning

Itsthe1st · 11/07/2025 06:49

Can you post a screenshot of just the description of your room on your booking confirmation op?

K0OLA1D · 11/07/2025 06:50

Yeah I wouldnt be happy either op.

You're completely right in pushing it.

I hope your room is nice this morning!

Harassedmum123 · 11/07/2025 06:51

I’d be furious too. I always book two bedroom apartments when we go away too and it is always more expensive though essential for us to be able to have the space. I hope you get when you actually booked when they move you tomorrow but if it was me, I’d still be seeking compensation/giving feedback to Tui about the rudeness and inflexibility by the staff which spoilt your first night.

MummyChocolateMonster · 11/07/2025 06:56

That’s a good point @BlueyNeedsToFuckOffsame price!
I’ll be reporting back on the differences. This is assuming we get to move today which is what we were promised last night!

Fingers crossed

anyolddinosaur · 11/07/2025 07:17

This is the hotel's issue to sort out. I'd be expecting something from them for the fuss - at least a bottle of wine, free safe/beach towels if they normally charge for them. And if I was b&b I wouldnt be giving them extra money by eating/drinking there.

Crappy review on tripadvisor if they dont make this right.

reelcat · 11/07/2025 07:22

Something similar happened to us and it got sorted and Tui gave us a choice of free trips as an apology as long as we didn't claim when home. We took the trip as I jist wanted to forget about it and enjoy the holiday!

Creamteasandbumblebees · 11/07/2025 07:25

This happened to us. TUI moved us to a nearby hotel after 2 days and gave us compensation.

chicola · 11/07/2025 07:31

Not sure what board basis you’re on but you should be compensated for this, maybe a free meal or two etc. I used to work in Greek hotels and they’re notorious for the ‘upgrades’ when in reality they’ve overbooked.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/07/2025 07:38

I hope you get moved okay today.

Itsthe1st · 11/07/2025 07:43

And do you have a screenshot of the room description of this category of room? Will be on the website

ThePussy · 11/07/2025 07:45

This happened to us in Greece - booked a two bed apartment and got a one bed with two put up beds in the kitchen. Thankfully booking.com agreed, and cancelled the booking. We drove off not knowing where we were going next but found the most beautiful small hotel about ten miles away and stayed there for less than the price of the apartment.

iwillcallhimgeorge · 11/07/2025 07:52

Well done for your excellent return hard stare to the receptionist, OP! I’d also be furious. Hoping you get the resolution you want today.

MummyChocolateMonster · 11/07/2025 07:54

@Itsthe1st not a lot of detail - but what we have now is described as 1 bedroom with beds in lounge and we booked the 2 bedroom.
