Year 7 in your school, do they mix up the classes or do the children stick with their form group all day?

And when does your school stream for ability?

Set by ability for English and Maths only in yr 7. All other subjects taken with form. From yr 9 mainly taught in mixed ability groups according to options chosen. Non examined subjects like PD and PE in form groups.Set by ability for English, Maths and Science. Top set do triple science.

Mrscharlieeeee · 10/07/2025 16:31

My DS is in his yr7 transition at the moment. From what I understand they are put into sets for maths and English based on their abilities, other lessons are with their form.

BlackberrySky · 10/07/2025 16:31

At our school they set by ability for English, Maths and Science from Jan of Y7, then languages and RE from Y9. They do most other stuff as a form except PE (can't remember why that is mixed with other Y7 classes!)

Not streamed by ability until y10 and then only sort of.
Set for some subjects from y7.
Other lessons in y7 in mixed groups so not many just in tutor group.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 10/07/2025 17:52

Mixed from form group. Streamed in January y7 maths and English only

TwinklyTraybake · 10/07/2025 17:54

My son is year 6 at moment, we were told on transition evening that they’re mixed for maths and pe in year 7. Everything else is done as a form group.

happydayzahead · 10/07/2025 18:03

My older two are Y7 and Y8 atm.
Only with form for 20min per day.

Maths, English and Science based from Y6 sats. Top set, middle, bottom. They have assessments throughout the year to see if it needs adjusting.

The other lessons are mixed. But so many children that there are two bands so A band don't have lessons with B band at all.

Y7 has 270 children in our school.

Not streamed at the grammar DS will be attending, except for PE as they do contact sports and they stream for ability and level of development so no tiny DS against almost man sized boy who's been playing rugby since he was 4.

LittleOwl153 · 10/07/2025 18:08

Yr 7 & 8
Maths set from day 1 (but these are fluid initially)
PE mixed groups- 2 or 3 tutor groups combined - to allow both a male and female teacher
Design - mixed across 2-3 tutor groups and taught in smaller groups so 3 tutor groups of 30 gives probably 5 design. Groups of 18.

Y9
Science is set the rest remains as above

Yr10/11
Options groups set for language and triple science rest are mixed ability.
Maths remains set
PE remains combined but just mixed

English is mixed groups but not sets - put together by English team to work to student/staff strengths.

scissy · 10/07/2025 18:29

All classes mixed from tutor group also.
The only lessons set by ability in Y7 are PE and Maths, after some baseline testing at the beginning of Y7.

TheNightingalesStarling · 10/07/2025 18:37

No lessons are in form groups... those are based on which house you are in. About 25 children.

One class for Maths, Science, Computing and MFL. Mainly based on Maths ability. (4 sets in two halves of the year)
Another class for English, drama and humanities. Mixed ability Yr7, then more streaming in higher years. (4 sets)
Another class for arts and technology... this is smaller (20 max I think)

PE is half the year group, but split into 2 boys and 2 girls groups. Depends on the sport they are doing whether its mixed ability of sort of streamed!

The only time other than form time they are in their form group is for the off timetable days for RS, politics, pshe, careers etc. (They don't have a weekly RS lesson)

TaborlinTheGreat · 10/07/2025 18:39

Y7 are with their form group all day. They are mixed up in Y8 for sone subjects. They are only setted in maths. It's a grammar school though, so a smaller ability range.

TeenLifeMum · 10/07/2025 18:43

DDs’ school they mix them up. Streamed in maths, science and English plus they do one language out of a choice of 3. It’s worked well for us as dtds are in the same form but only have maths together. They do different languages and have slightly different abilities.

Crunchymum · 10/07/2025 18:45

English, Maths, Science and French (or other language) are in sets. The rest is mixed forms. DC1 has no lessons at all with his actual form group.

Caramelty · 10/07/2025 18:49

Comprehensive, 8 forms per year. In y7 sets by ability for English, maths and PE (after first half term). In y8 sets are extended to foreign languages, sciences and humanities (initially based on your English set, but lots of movement intra-year depending on end-of-unit test results).

Classes are mixed up a lot therefore !

Bigtom · 10/07/2025 19:13

With their form all day for my DD, but it is a grammar school as with some PPs.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 10/07/2025 19:17

Set by ability for maths. Year group split into two halves and then randomly mixed for some subjects and other subjects in tutor groups (RS, PSHE).

mysecretshame · 10/07/2025 19:21

Set for maths and PE in Y7. Everything else form group.
Y8/9 set for maths and PE and there is a top and bottom set for English (giving extra help for those who need it) and the others are mixed. Not set for languages but there is a choice so not with form group. Other subjects with form group until Y10.
Big school so setting is broad and there is movement.
