Housing wise, what do you think you need / want to have kids?

As the title states. What do you think the bare minimum is housing wise for children, and what things are nice to have?

Could be anything from a flat with a floor to sleep on, to a sprawling mansion so each child can have its own bedroom and bathroom plus 5 acres of garden. Although most people will be somewhere in between!

A warm safe place for them is essential.

Their own room is nice to have.

Communal areas the family uses such as living room, dining room etc are also nice to haves.

I’ve known people (quite affluent lawyers) have two children and two parents in a one bed flat. It was fine when they were small.

The official UK guidelines are one bedroom per adult couple (or single adult) and one per two children if the children are under ten, and one per two same sex children if over ten. So a two bedroom flat when children are small and three bedrooms when they get older, assuming opposite sex children. That seems reasonable to me.

Secure rented is fine, it doesn’t have to be owned. I think I’d be nervous with children in a private rental with no security. Luckily the renters reform bill should make private rentals more secure in the near future.
