Aubergine Symbolism?

Does anyone have any idea why my neighbours might have tied an aubergine to the front of their house?

The first picture I'm posting was taken two months ago. The aubergine remains in place today.

Oh, the image upload failed. Now I don't look mad at all.

Is it the new Pampas Grass ?

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 09/07/2025 17:26

I would imagine anyone’s aubergine would be shrivelled after two months of sun exposure 😎

Let's try this again

There must be a reason

It's to let wellwishers know that Keith's vasectomy has gone well, but he doesn't want to talk about it, thanks.

IdaGlossop · 09/07/2025 17:31

Is this an elaborate joke about premature ejaculation?

FlexiSadie · 09/07/2025 17:33

I look forward to the punchline if it is a joke. This has been occupying my thoughts for weeks now. I walk past it several times daily.

I have no punch line. Why don't you ask your neighbour why the aubergine is there? Ideas: germinating so they can grow their own aubergine; fertilising the plants underneath it; teasing neighbours; secret communication with the police or drug dealer.

FlexiSadie · 09/07/2025 17:42

I have never actually seen said neighbour. The house is a few doors down rather than next door. There is a key safe on the wall, but I don't know if that's for the current residents or previous ones.

This area is a cultural melting pot so I wondered if it was some tradition I wasn't aware of?

Also, the houses open onto the street so I guess a passerby could have tied it on?!

It's phallic and ultimately flaccid. Someone might be crying out for Viagra in there.

ggratis · 09/07/2025 17:52

Could they be trying to sundry it?Confused

ggratis · 09/07/2025 17:53

Are they witches? Could it be some type of protective spell?

FlexiSadie · 09/07/2025 17:55

I did think they might be trying to dry it but the street is covered in litter and wheelie bins, etc, so it wouldn't be terribly hygienic!

And if they were trying to dry the seeds, surely they'd open it up to expose the seeds?

No plants underneath to fertilize. There are a few weeds but this is literally on the street.

Do they have kids could it be a science experiment

PsychoHotSauce · 09/07/2025 17:58

This seems like some kind of weird 'science experiment' that would be posted with understated glee on the Dull Men's Club on Facebook!

SunshineDeLaSoul · 09/07/2025 18:01

Swingers. Do they have an upside down pineapple anywhere? Or pampas grass?

moondip · 09/07/2025 18:08

Hmmm if there were anything other than weeds around I’d wonder if it was to try and deter bugs/slugs or something. And I’ve just Googled whether aubergines repel pests, but apparently all pests love aubergines!

FlexiSadie · 09/07/2025 18:14

My autistic five-year-old's current 'special interest' is seeing how things rot, so I suppose it could be a kid thing.

I have no idea who lives there. I might looks for clues when I walk the dogs later (assuming it ever cools down enough to do so, that is)

putitovertherefornow · 09/07/2025 18:27

Maybe they were waiting for the seeds in it to ripen so they can harvest them and grow some aubergine plants next year.

Either that, or they are bonkers.

FlexiSadie · 09/07/2025 19:23

I really hoped someone here would be aware of some significance that made it all make sense 😂
