Do air coolers work?

Can’t put a portable aircon unit in due to house layout.
So, in order to hopefully stay alive through the next heatwave, I’ve been looking at air coolers which blow air over ice blocks.

Does anyone use one? Do I need 60 stacked up around me to work?

Any recommendations? Help me survive, please!

They don't work. Save your money.

You can just put a block of ice in front of an ordinary fan.

I have two portable AC units, are you sure you can't have one? You are supposed to put the pipe out the window but I have seen one used with the pipe to the loft.

My method for keeping cool.

First thing in the morning open all windows and then use a fan to blow the hot air out of the windows, cool outside air will flow in. Well it will if there is any.

Close windows and pull down blinds / close curtains, this keeps the cool air in and the sun out, your job now is to keep it cool.

Use fans to circulate the air.

I have a sort of towel that I wet and put around my neck and it does work to an extent.

Thank you. No, aircon units won’t work in the house layout and windows. I had one once before so I know this to be true.
ive got an autoimmune condition that keeps me running hot at the best of times, heatwaves are hell to me.
I’ll make all the ice!

I run hot and I have arthritis which is an autoimmune one, I wonder if they are linked?

Do try the cooling towels, I have also been known to put PJs in the fridge / freezer.

Make a DIY swamp cooler. Cheap easy and effective. Lots of instructions online.

We recently bought an air cooler from B&Q, the fan aspect of it is great and really strong. I’d say the cooler does work, not quite to A/C levels, but the room does feel cooler than with a standard fan

I’ve got Hashimoto’s and it seems to come packaged with arthritis as well as a broken thermostat 🥵 Having spent the day in London, I am currently drained beyond belief (the trains 😢) and probably dehydrated from all the deeply attractive sweating.

Downstairs I have my normal fan on me and I’m ok-ish (25c) but my bedroom is 32c. I’ll take some frozen cooling mats and a long, frozen water bottle and hope for some sleep (up since 5am). Oh, and my water spray.

I think I’ll save my money - thanks for the advice - and see if I can create a cloak of frozen pet-cooling pads tomorrow.
Then I think I’ll move to Iceland 😂
