How midgey is Glencoe? Scotland end of august

38 replies

AlertCat · 08/07/2025 18:46

Going at the end of august. Never been so late while it’s still technically summer! Will the midges still be thriving?

Also visiting islands. Do I need more jumpers than I think I will?

@AlertCat

Peak season hen, especially if yer tasty.

Some relief here

CatOnAHotRadiator · 08/07/2025 19:09

Last time we were at glencoe in summer my husband went for a midnight wee (camping) and did do bug spray and his legs were covered in thousands of bites. So very.

stargirl1701 · 08/07/2025 19:09

It’s going to be bad, OP.

East Coast is midgie free!

Menopants · 08/07/2025 19:10

Just don’t

Menopants · 08/07/2025 19:10

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/07/2025 19:13

@CatOnAHotRadiator his legs? 🙈

CatOnAHotRadiator · 08/07/2025 19:19

@beetr00 he escaped a worse fate. Not sure how!!

MrsSethGecko · 08/07/2025 19:20

The bastards will be up your nose and crawling on your eyeballs. They'll be in your ears.

😂 I wish they hadn't removed the laugh response you made me laugh 😆

Op you need Smidge and antihistamines , im severely allergic to midge bites so if I'm in .a bad area I take a antihistamine

ScaryM0nster · 08/07/2025 19:31

Very.

And yes. For islands you will need more jumpers, more sun scream and a substantial water/windproof jacket.

I’m current rocking sunburn and drying out soaked kit.

Menopants · 08/07/2025 20:11

dont forget ticks. But it is a wonderful place. I hope you are not camping

CarpetKnees · 08/07/2025 20:17

Very

CarpetKnees · 08/07/2025 20:18

Yet another thread when I wish we still had the laugh 'reaction'.

I didn't realise how useful it was / how many times I liked to use it until it was gone.

Some very funny people on MN

Crinkleybottomburger · 08/07/2025 20:23

If you go you need Smidge. I put it on my face and I saw a midge get 2 inches away and then do a U turn. It’s a beautiful part of the world and well worth a visit.

Dearg · 08/07/2025 20:23

It’s going to be pissing with rain and howling wind by then, so that should keep them off you.

CaspersMum24 · 08/07/2025 20:26

Glencoe is gorgeous, but if you want good weather and a relatively midge free holiday, then go in April/May or late September/early October. Otherwise stock up on Smidge, and hope for windy weather.

Steelworks · 08/07/2025 20:27

Don’t get out of the car! It’s a beautiful area though.

"you need Smidge. I put it on my face and I saw a midge get 2 inches away and then do a U turn"

how the hell can you even see them, ah must be blind Pew! (unless a swarm ofc)

gradygals · 08/07/2025 20:35

The easiest thing to do is to take one antihistamine tablet every morning. The midges will still get you but you will not itch.

Diversion · 08/07/2025 20:38

Google Thermacell on Amazon, nifty little machine that runs off tiny gas cartridges and has little mats which slide in releasing a vapour which midges and other bugglies do not like. Also Nordic Summer repellent, comes in a little tin and smells like pine trees and bonfires. I am obviously very tasty as I get bitten often, but these two things have really helped. The owner of the campsite we visit swears by eating Marmite and says the bugs hate him, you could perhaps try a Vitamin B complex tablet instead if you hate the stuff.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 08/07/2025 20:41

That time of year? Go to the cairngorms instead. Will be awful

What do you mean by 'by then'? It's going to be August. Is that practically midwinter in that part of Scotland? When will it feel like summer there? Have we blinked and missed it?

beetr00 · 08/07/2025 20:50

@ModerateOrGoodOccasionallyPoor

"When will it feel like summer there?"

This is Glencoe, SCOTLAND we're talking about, summer! 🤣.

We usually have one day, in the middle of June, if I recall correctly 😉

I wish this was true. I live on the east coast and they love eating me. Definitely not as many here at least but the wee buggers still find me. One got me today and I haven’t even left my house.

Smidge is absolutely amazing though. Just don’t accidentally get any on your mouth. It was worse than being numbed at the dentist. 🙈
