The Gods Have Shone Upon Me

SardinesOnGingerbread · 08/07/2025 15:48

Having felt that life has been going too smoothly of late, and the summer sunshine making me feel like taking life by the horns, I decided it was time to try buying some new jeans.

Important context: I am 5'2. I am a woman. I have had three children. I am perimenopausal.

Previous shopping attempts have taught me that jean shopping must be undertaken in multiple stages. The initial walk round and trying on of the first dozen or so pairs. The sad acceptance that I look upholstered. The second trip. Pairs 12-30ish. Worse. Catching sight of my dappled arse cheeks in the changing room lighting designed by some fucker that hates women. Mild depression. Trip three. Grief stages of bargaining and depression. Gin. Sticking forks into my eyeballs. Usually by about pair 50 - and please do not imagine this is exaggerated because, as sure as eggs is eggs, around 50 is my average try on for new jeans - I find something that doesn't make me want to cry. I fork out the goods, and then pay about £15 more to have someone lop off about two feet off the length so I can wear them in public.

But today, my friends, today God herself has blessed me and shone her countenance upon me. First shop, first pair. I shit you not.

Having heard some slightly optimistic tales of Levis, I polished my credit card and headed in on my lunch hour. I was leapt on by a gorgeous looking twenty something as soon as my fingers touched fabric. I usually hate this, but resigned to my fate told Ms Gorgeous what I wanted.

She immediately handed me a pair straight away and told me she was getting the same pair two inches shorter for me. I waited for the runty legged version (this isn't my first rodeo) and tried them on first.

Well fuck me sideways with a banjo, they fit, they were comfortable, I looked not only acceptable but actually rather nice.

So in the interest of karmic balance for all the whining I do, here is my glorious tale of Levis and the servant of God who helped me today.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Levis. But if they are looking for a chonky middle aged influencer with three followers on the Tricky Tok to shower with their product, well, I'll struggle on through.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Now if you can just ask those same gods where I can get some padded, underwired, t-shirt bras in size massive…but that don’t let my boobs fall out of the middle or become pointed like Madonna, that would be perfect 🤣

I got this recently and am very happy with it https://www.very.co.uk/fantasie-rebecca-essentialsnbspunderwired-spacer-moulded-bra-black/1600690330.prd

You are hilarious 😆. Can we be friends?

Done. Please be aware that I'm boring AF in real life and have the social skills of a carrot. Now you have signed the contract I shall phone every day and send you trinkets that say 'When I count my blessings I count you twice'.

How bizarre the Gods are focusing on a short, middle aged woman’s shopping and not, say, preventing people dying from starvation around the world. 🤔

Well, looking at the state of the world you didn't really think they were focusing on the big stuff, did you?

This looks perfect. Thanks

I was getting the Gorgeous ones from Debenhams, bought about 40 when it was discontinued, and I’m down to my last new pack.

I really should have looked before now.

crackofdoom · 08/07/2025 18:44

I braved Primark last year and amazingly found 2 pairs of jeans that looked OK...in fact one pair I would say even looked better than that, positively flattering. Did another high speed raid on Primark on Saturday- with the DC in tow!- and found the same jeans again , reduced to a tenner. Acquired jeans, pants, socks ,hats, in and out within half an hour 💥. No need to set foot in another clothes shop for at least 6 months now.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 08/07/2025 18:49

"Fuck me sideways with a banjo" that's hilarious 😂

On for God's sake, we're all allowed to laugh occasionally

Ach, if there wasn't someone with lips pursed like a cat's arse at something, you wouldn't know it was Mumsnet. It's what makes us superior to Nethuns.

I don’t know how to propose this thread for Classics, it certainly should be there based on overall humour, outstanding storytelling and in celebration of Ms Gorgeous & Sardine’s jeans.

soupmaker · 08/07/2025 22:34

I’m loving this. It’s like old Mumsnet. Levi’s are useless for me though. I’m 5’9” and am best described as a barrel on legs so no Levi’s waist is ever going round my middle. I’ve not quite found the holy grail of jeans but M&S Siennas aren’t far off for my menopausal spread. Best served long and turned up.

Funniest thing I've read in a while. Thanks for the laugh, sardine. Please share a pic of you in your new jeans 😀

Congratulations. 🍾
This happened to me a couple of years ago.
Picked up 1 pair of straight leg mid rise jeans in Next. Didn't have high hopes. Went into changing room. Put them on. Couldn't believe it. Perfect. Bought 3 pairs. Yes, a very rare occurrence.

You and me both. The same Next jeans. I couldn't believe it either. I'm wearing a pair right now, funnily enough.

I love your writing style. Im 5 feet tall and well, sadly round. Buying jeans is a real pain. Everything is too long even the petite ranges. I need to go bra shopping soon, that is a real trauma. Look in the mirror, dam some podgy, pale, knackered woman is looking at me. Oh crap thats me! Its not good....

WideOpenBeaches · 08/07/2025 22:54

St Homobonus is the Patron Saint of shopping appaz. 😇

The Gods are definitely working in mysterious ways just prior to opening this thread I was perusing the internet for Levi jeans😮you are obviously sending out mind vibes @SardinesOnGingerbread.

Outstanding write up! This gave me the vibes I absolutely needed! OP I am Delighted for you and your holy jeans from the heavens above!

I did see some 'barrel leg' (described) jeans from M&S on Vinted that might be worth a try. They've got the smaller waist larger thigh ratio that sounds like I resemble a fifties starlet rather than the Cluedo piece shaped bottle that I am.

What happened to you is worth celebrating. Given especially that it is so rare, because of our awful retail offering in the UK.

Hopefully the first of many such small wins.
