Where to sell ring

Hoping to get the knowledge of you lovely lot.

I want to sell one of my rings. It is a platinum diamond solitaire. Beautiful ring, but I don't wear it (ride motorcycles - catches in glove). Wondering if you can tell me the best place to go to get anything other than metal melt down value.

I live near Winchester if location required.

You probably won’t get much for it and certainly nothing close to insurance valuation if you have one. Sadly, it’s just how jewellers work as I found out trying to sell a ring myself a few years ago. My valuation was £3000, I was offered £300 roughly. That was in and around London when I visited for a weekend. In the end a local jeweller put it in their window and sold it for me. They took a percentage of what it sold for. Might be worth a visit to some local independent jewellers to see what they say.

You could try Elmwood jewellery auction in London.

I had a similar issue. Ring was worth £5k, went to two different jewellers. One offered me £375 cash, £750 part exchange; the other offered me £180!

I needed rid of it (emotional reasons) so I took the part exchange and got a beautiful ring that I love. But I’ll never, ever buy jewellery new again now I’ve learned what a rip off it is!

Auction or sell it yourself on eBay - you’ll get more if you have the GIA certificate.

Thanks, not bothered about the money really just it is a beautiful ring and pointless keeping it tbh.

If you live near Winch you probably know it's heaving with jewellers and they all have a consignment tray where they are selling 'pre-loved' jewellery.

Do you have any documentation about your diamond confirming its size/colour/flaws? That might help you get a reasonable price.

Jeremy France or Burrell's, both on the high street, would be able to flog it for you. There's also Donna Laine in Parchement St. across from the back door of WH Smith and Offord & Sons in the upper high street but I think they have lower levels of passers-by.

I doubt Aura in Parchement St. would be interested and Parchment Bespoke Diamonds, next to it, is owned by Jeremy France.

Thank you. I know Winch but don't have much to do with jewellery so that helps. I do have all the paperwork. I'll take it in next Monday when I'm off and see what they say.

Is there not someone you can gift it to rather than sell if the money isn’t an issue? You will only get pennies for the ring that is worth so much more

i wasn’t sure if I could tolerate earrings again and wanted a nice pair for sentimental reasons so got a diamond pair from a jewellery store for £900.

About 3 months later I thought I would upgrade so went back to the same store (store could resell as earrings not have it break them down) and was offered £300 part exchange against a new pair costing £4K. I took both pairs of earrings back with me and gave my old ones to a friend

a few months later I saw a pair like my old ones, pre owned, for sale the same price I’d paid for similar ones new in the shop window

Size40Shoes · 07/07/2025 22:49

@OnTheBoardwalk there is no one I can gift to. I had boy children and they are all single. No other family.

Would you not wear it as a necklace? An independent jewellery could remodel it for you.

I don't generally wear any jewellery, so not something I would do tbh.

Fair enough @Size40Shoes you've had some options on this thread and appreciate they aren’t for you

please do update us on the sale options you've been given. Be good to see what sort of values are out there

good luck!

Size40Shoes · 08/07/2025 23:35

I feel I've sounded very negative. Apologies. I am grateful for the ideas.

What size is the diamond? I had several to sell and the jeweller's advice was to sell on e bay which I did.

Boy children might want to give it as an engagement ring but it wouldn't be as meaningful if you want rid for, say, relationship reasons.

Do some googling of shop hours before you go on a Monday, since I think most jewellers are open Tues - Sun but closed on Monday. Jeremy France himself once told me, 'Nobody wants to buy jewellery on Mondays'
