I’ve lost the blasted door key!

Absolutely no idea what I’ve done. Took the dog for a walk with my singular key. came home, let myself in with said key, made a coffee. Later on met a friend for a drink. Didn’t bring keys as partner was in. Key has vanished. What have I done?! I’ve searched high and low and it’s gone!

manifest its return to me I’m panicking incase someone breaks in during the night

I lose my keys frequently. It's much easier to find them now I have a brightly coloured, oversize keyring on them! A tip for when you find them.

LemonLass · 06/07/2025 22:31

Hi @dogsandbudgey
As a fellow dog owner, I would check in all my pockets, including coat. Do you have somewhere where you always leave your key - could it have been knocked off and behind something?

It will be in the house if you let yourself in with it. Do you have a key to lock up with?

gamerchick · 06/07/2025 22:32

Ask the house for them back nicely. House gremlins I call it

kinkytoes · 06/07/2025 22:34

Did you dash for the loo when you got in? Maybe in there? Or by the kettle when you made the coffee.

CalicoPusscat · 06/07/2025 22:34

At worst partner could get a copy made. I wear mine round my neck so it sounds like a cat with a bell collar coming!

dogsandbudgey · 06/07/2025 22:37

It’s making think I’ve even more crazy than i originally thought. I have a little dumping plate for keys on my hall table. Nope, not there. I’ve literally torn the house apart checked pockets ( have even checked the fridge) no joke lol I can’t find it. Partner hasn’t had it either. Dog is old and almost as daftme so definitely not down to him. I just can’t understand. My sister has since told me of a story were a dilvery driver once picked up keys outside a driveway and broke into the house weeks later. Thanks sis!

What’s interesting is I would understand there state of ‘lostness’ if weeks had gone by but in the space of a few hours?!?

Put your coat on and search the pockets again

BrentfordForever · 06/07/2025 22:42

Did you check rubbish or fridge ?

BrentfordForever · 06/07/2025 22:46

Or if you’re on prime you can get this metal detector https://amzn.eu/d/ejj54UD

TheCurious0range · 06/07/2025 22:50

I put tile tags on mine for this exact reason (also in my purse and on my earbud case) won't help now but will if you find it or have to replace the lock

pizzaHeart · 06/07/2025 22:51

My approach is to repeat all I’ve done with slowly looking in all 3 dimensions. It usually helps apart from lost gold chain 25 years ago but that’s another story.

Saggyoldclothbody · 06/07/2025 22:52

Does your coat have a hood? One of our keys got stuck there once. Discovered some months later.

fridaynightbeers · 06/07/2025 22:58

I thought I’d lost my keys the other day and even though I’d checked my handbag three times it wasn’t til I emptied it that they fell out of an inside pocket of the bag.
Do you take paraphernalia out with the dog - a treat bag, dog toy, poo bags? If so where do they get put away when you get in?
Did you go straight to the loo when you got in, or go out in the back garden to hang washing out? Put dirty trousers in the laundry and key fell out? Took walking boots off and dropped key whilst putting them away? Think back and retrace your steps.

MsMiniver · 06/07/2025 23:02

DH found my keys in the kitchen bin once.

dogsandbudgey · 06/07/2025 23:02

Thing is I have a small teddy bear key ring on it so it’s not an insignificant thing. Not the sort of thing that falls down the side of sofa. I’m wondering has it fallen out of my pocket. I’ve remembered I went to get milk, was going to walk but it started to rain. I wonder have I had it in my pocket and it’s fallen out along the way! I don’t even remember lifting it but you know how you do things without even realising ( my partner disagrees with me on this he can’t fathom how I wouldn’t know if I brought a key)

TyneTeas · 06/07/2025 23:12

Is it in your bra?

I once spent hours looking for a set of keys I had shoved down my clevage

fridaynightbeers · 06/07/2025 23:12

What sort of clothes did you have on that it would just fall out of a pocket though? Sounds unlikely unless you pulled something else like a tissue out of your pocket and it came out at the same time.
When you were going to get milk but it started to rain, did you drive instead or not go at all?

kinkytoes · 06/07/2025 23:18

Check your local Facebook page in case someone honest has found it.

wizzler · 06/07/2025 23:44

Try the poo bag drawer !

AnchorWHAT · 07/07/2025 11:29

Did you drop it in the bin with the poo bag?

Makingpeace · 07/07/2025 11:32

Is it in the front door still? This is what my DH did once. Turned the house upside looking for his key, adamant that he had it when he came in as how else would he get in.....but left it in the lock in the door.

Justbobbins · 29/08/2025 18:23

Try the linings of your pockets

OdeToTheNorthWestWind · 29/08/2025 19:09

Does your pocket have any holes in it? I once found £3.40 in the lining of my coat, that had fallen through the hole😄

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 30/08/2025 11:50

if you bought milk did you bring in home in a shopping bag then put the ‘empty’ bag away (I’ve done this, searched high and low and found the key in a Tesco bag in the cupboard!) Hope it turns up soon
