What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

Wow some of the judgement on here.
I used to have red streaks in my brown hair as a teen, then went onto pink. In my early twenties I decided to try blue streaks and mostly I’ve stuck to it.

I do it myself and have it down to an art. It costs me less than £10 when I do it. When I dye my hair one brown occasionally my friends say I don’t look like me. 😂

I work in a corporate role.
It’s not a political agenda, I’m not a lesbian. I’m 34 and like it better than my hair being plain.

JollyGreenSleeves · 06/07/2025 09:44

When I was a teen it was the rocker types who experimented with hair colour. I like it! And I wouldn’t assume political views from it.

I'm intrigued to know what colours op that they are so individual that noone else will have them in the world and you'll instantly be identified by them!

So why would you dye it pink/purple whatever when you get your legal job?
Anyone with MH pink or manhater blue hair, would not be employed by me. It just screams "I don't fucking care what you think."

Because it doesn't affect how I do my job? I don't think I'd want to be employed by someone saying things like 'manhater blue hair' either tbh even if I had 'normal' hair.

Cucy · 06/07/2025 09:45

I love it!

But a lot of people are uncomfortable with people who are different to them or stick out above the rest and so you will get people who dislike it.

StMarie4me · 06/07/2025 09:45

OP please understand you are not getting a balanced response here. MN thinks we should all be clones of their perceived perfection and anything else is radical extremism.

You do you. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.

StMarie4me · 06/07/2025 09:43

This is peak Mumsnet. 🤣🤣🤣

True, though, of those with bright blue and green hair that I know. An extension of unwashed, unkempt clothes.

Workingonthehighway · 06/07/2025 09:45

To me its like a hair version of the comedy tie or socks.

WompWompBoom · 06/07/2025 09:46

I've got short hair and it's a colour called magenta rouge. It's very bright and hits pinky red tones in sunlight. I've never really considered what people think of it. I've had it this colour for about 20 years now, I have it cut and coloured every 5/6 weeks, there's so many greys under there I'd need to dye it brown now anyway.

And I'm a feminist, don't buy into trans women are women viewpoint and hold a really professional role where I manage a team of people.

Interestingly I'd never considered some people might have strong views either way about my hair colour. (Although ironically I associate the yellows/greens and blues to the NB community so I'd never go for them).

Isthisnormal10000 · 06/07/2025 09:46

It depends on the colour and style for me
Baby pink I would usually think someone in beauty or hair industry.
Red, blue or green and short : new age traveller or other alternative lifestyle or politics.
Red blue, purple or green and long: used to be a goth, or is into wicca and healing.

Noshadelamp · 06/07/2025 09:46

Wow pp are so rude and judgemental. No need to be so nasty.

I'd rather a lovely friend with pink hair than half the pp on this post.

Fratolish · 06/07/2025 09:47

StMarie4me · 06/07/2025 09:43

You mean you do.

Hair colour = extremism. 🤣

Wow!

Do you also think all women with short hair are gay? Are you always this judgmental?

This is honestly so wild to me. My 15 year old was talking about how kids her age judge other people to be gay or whatever based on their hair colour or style. We were rolling our eyes together and laughing at how childish that was. And here are a bunch of presumably grown women doing the same. Maybe they're the parents of the nasty little shits in my kid's school?

Jamesblonde2 · 06/07/2025 09:47

I agree with PP - activist or autistic. A pale pink wash out for a trip to Ibiza maybe not. If it’s blue I usually think they have counselling. Obviously nothing to do with me what people do with their hair but you did ask.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 06/07/2025 09:49

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 06/07/2025 09:22

I do not associate it with anything political. I am in my 50s and I mostly associate bright colours in hair with people my age or a bit older doing the whole, "I'm crazy, me! " thing.

This - it's a bit like joke t-shirts. It's as if someone is repeating the joke over and over, or that in this case, "I'm so wacky" over and over.

I dyed my hair purple, blue and black at various stages of my teens/20s, but unless you really love the colour (and can afford for it to stay nice, not going to shit), surely you can just dress in bright colours?

JaninaDuszejko · 06/07/2025 09:49

I live in the SE so unsure if this means I see it more..

So, what, you think colourful hair dye hasn't reached the north yet? Hate to break it to you but my cousin dyed her hair pink and purple as a teenager on an island off Scotland in the 1980s. Honestly, considering you're complaining about other people's prejudice you're showing a lot yourself.

StarlightLady · 06/07/2025 09:50

I love a subtle pink hue.

Wow, what a weird thread. I’ve never heard anyone voice these opinions in real life. I think it’s a bit of fun, personal preference. It’s a look I like and me and my friends used to dye our hair a lot in our teens and twenties. I prefer natural colours that suit my skin tone now but I’m always a bit secretly envious when I see middle aged and older women with bright colours. I’ve never considered it as anything to do with politics or gender ideology.

Agreed! I’ve never dyed my hair anything remotely interesting but I never have thought less of someone who has. I love purple and would actually quite like to try some streaks in my blonde hair, but the upkeep looks a faff.

An interesting thread!

WFHmutha25 · 06/07/2025 09:50

Back in the day I dyed my hair, these days it gives the "Im mad, me!" vibes.

ScratCat · 06/07/2025 09:51

I think it’s a bit tragic and the person thinks it’s whacky. Never looks good.

TizerorFizz · 06/07/2025 09:51

@xWildFlowerx Most solicitors are fairly traditional. Having loud coloured hair will be an issue if they have more conventional people to employ and a huge choice. As you aren’t even a paralegal yet, I’d start looking at solicitors in court and those in offices. What do they look like? I think you would be really up against it in a very over subscribed profession. You won’t get the high net worth work that’s for sure. You have a long way to go and I’d be looking smart and professional if you actually want a job and solicitor training is another world of competitiveness. Getting noticed for the wrong reasons isn’t a great idea.

Dreamlight · 06/07/2025 09:51

I am shocked at some of these replies! It's just hair colour. I love that you can get all these colours for your hair now. I have been literally every colour under the sun am not ND, am fairly conservative in my out look but just love the bright colours! When your hair is boring grey, the bright colours give you a bit of a lift!

It's actually made me laugh that people are so judgy about hair.

beetr00 · 06/07/2025 09:52

@StonePaperScissors

You are a unicorn 🦄 LOVE it

A total blessing as a collective 👌

Careeradviceplease1234 · 06/07/2025 09:52

Like others on this thread rightly or wrongly I assume you're aligned with some very specific ideologies and your probably going to be a tiresome person I'd rather avoid.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 06/07/2025 09:52

Honestly? I assume they’re void of personality and use colourful hair and extreme politics as a replacement.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/07/2025 09:53

What about nail varnish and make up, and other color not intended by God...?
