Lytham festival cancelled tonight!

So disappointed. After a 2 hour drive we arrived in wet and windy lytham, no difference from many other lytham days. Apparently this perfectly normal Blackpool weather was enough to cancel a concert we'd been looking forward to.

Alanis Morrisette is apparently a serial canceller.

What a waste of an evening, my precious time and also the money we spent on an evening meal in lytham. Thank goodness for the lovely serving staff at Spago restaurant.

The organisers cancelled it due to high winds, Alanis wasn't responsible for the cancellation!

Exactly this. Why on earth presume Alanis chose to cancel?

simsbustinoutmimi · 05/07/2025 00:07

Yes, it wasn’t just Alanis performing. This wasn’t down to her. Better a cancellation than it being unsafe.

ZenNudist · 05/07/2025 00:16

But winds were pretty much same as usual. Lived there 18 years. Left and visit / stay regularly for the last 25. It's often windy. So why plan a festival that won't work given general conditions?

Got back to Manchester and were regaled with tales of all the concerts alanis morissette has cancelled by our lovely waitress in local cocktail bar who is also a big fan. Bit of a coincidence?

Just feel really flat. No point booking outdoor gigs in UK. Next time will book abroad.

When oasis ticket prices rocketed I couldn't bring myself to pay so much because I knew bad weather would ruin it.

What might seem ‘normal’ weather to you isn’t ‘normal’ when you have a high temporary structure stage, lighting rigs, big screens etc.

DH’s workplace (a stadium) lets a certain number of nights annually to a music promoter after the season ends, so he’s been around at the business end of various safety decisions. One big headliner was deemed just about safe enough to go ahead, but his big screens were only at half height because of winds. They don’t make these decisions lightly because of issuing refunds!

CallMeFlo · 05/07/2025 00:31

It was advertised as cancelled from this afternoon. You really think they'd have cancelled the whole event rather than just say she couldn't appear? People have lost a fortune due to the cancellation

It's not going to be a decision the organisers made lightly

putitovertherefornow · 05/07/2025 01:07

Public safety (and that of the performers and workforce) has to to come first, and the organisers wouldn't have taken that decision lightly.

It was not announced as cancelled from this (yesterday) afternoon. I wish they had saved me the leave I took from work, The time spent stressing about what to wear and tbe 2 hr drive.

I was getting text updates confirming going ahead, the last one at 1643 when I'd been sat in traffic for 45 mins . I copy below:

Timings have changed for tonight's event. They now are:
Gates: 16:30
Lottery Winners: 17:00
Train: 18:00
Liz Phair: 19:15
Alanis Morissette: 20:30
End: 22:00

I STILL don't have a text cancelling.

Also I'm not saying public safety isn't important. I'm saying it's a near certainty that it would be windy so why plan it at all and how have they managed to have it in previous years?

Was your lovely waitress a friend of the Human League ? 😂

If they make the decision to cancel after a certain point the insurance will pay out.

DP is crew for events like this and sometimes they have to start building things they know will almost certainly be cancelled.

My friend and I also drove 3 hours to get there, got the timing change email from Ticketmaster at 16.51, arrived at 18.00 to a lot of confused people saying it was cancelled but nothing (and still nothing!) from ticketmaster or on the Lytham festival app.

Found a post on their Facebook page that was posted at 18.00 confirming the cancellation and also made our way to Spago for a nice meal.

I’m assuming there will be a refund for the tickets but not sure about the £25 car parking ticket I also bought from Ticketmaster and obv nothing for the waste of time and petrol.

I do understand that festival structures can be unsafe in the wind but the communication of it was really bad.

Very disappointed not to see Alanis (and Train who I was also looking forward to)

Well, if it’s happened in previous years, all that tells you is that yesterday’s weather was out of the ordinary, surely? Despite your perception?

rookiemere · 05/07/2025 07:33

Weather always seems to be rubbish the weekend of the Lytham festival. We have had rain at Duran Duran, Sting, Lionel Ritchie and Madness. Thankfully friend and I decided not to dust off our VIP ponchos this year ( bought and accessorised especially for Lytham) and instead are in the Lake District where it’s drizzling.
If anyone is at Lythams , go to Elvins for an amazing middle eastern takeaway.

glassof · 05/07/2025 07:43

I live close by and had tickets, really bad form from the organisers. Previous years the weather has been worse!

On the flip side (not for me but maybe for others) Blackpool Pleasure Beach are offering 2 for 1 of tickets for those with Lytham Festival tickets. Show tickets when paying. Although it is still windy, don't think The Big One will open today.

Redburnett · 05/07/2025 09:28

It was only cancelled after the gates opened and people were starting to come in from 4.30pm, so probably around 4.45 or 5pm. I was working there doing ticket checking. TBH I found the organisation generally to be pretty chaotic/shambolic. As others have said there are often high winds along that coast. All the structures looked stable to me.

Pippa12 · 05/07/2025 11:40

We went too. I can’t understand why they cancelled so late, the weather forecast was the saying high winds and rain from Thursday morning? It was hardly a freak change of weather!

I have also heard Alannis Morrisette cancelled
at the drop of a hat.

User32459 · 05/07/2025 11:48

That's ridiculous. If it was a real storm or thunderstorms then fair enough, but wasn't it just typical windy weather that you get on that coast?

FourLove · 05/07/2025 11:52

Sadly with global warming the wind is much stronger and more dangerous than it used to be.

No point arranging festivals there then.

Snitter1969 · 05/07/2025 13:51

Goodness me! What a lot of speculative nonsense dressed up as facts there are on here!

  1. Alanis did not cancel
  2. It was due to high winds which made the stage unsafe
  3. No promoter ever cancels a gig unless it’s COMPLETELY necessary. It costs them a fortune to cancel, and makes them look bad.

I was most of the way then when it was cancelled. I knew the second it was, as my friend works for Cuffe & Taylor and was in the meeting that led to the cancellation. Nobody wants to cancel gigs, it’s horrible. Safety has to come first though. It certainly wasn’t “the same weather as when Sting played” - I was there too!

this will give you an idea what it was like there last night. Btw: winds were predicted to get worse after this! https://www.lythamstannes.news/news/granada-reports-weather-presenter-nearly-blown-away-at-lytham-festival/
