Not glass. Maybe one of those thick plastic covers? Anyone have any recommendations?

We used a vinyl table covering from ‘wipeeasy’ and a table protector underneath.

Same. It's not oak but ours is a farmhouse style pine table bought by my grandfather. We buy wipable material by the meter from Dunelm from the big roles or you can buy large table clothes from eBay for 20 quid or so. When the kids are a bit older we will uncover it. The leftover table cloths make great art mats!

We had a heat resistant mat underneath a plastic wipeable cloth.

I have to admit to being happy when the children were old enough to not need it anymore and I could see my lovely oak table again, but you can get some nice patterns and it did save my table!

That is exactly what we have.
