What were you doing in 1997?

GCSEs for me, plus ploughing my way through the music grades and the Duke of Edinburghs. I can’t even pretend it led anywhere particularly exciting in the end but hey ho.

Friends was still massive. ER was still massive. The Spice Girls were still massive. There was a tamagotchi craze and lime green was suddenly an in colour. I got my first email address which was a CompuServe one consisting just of numbers.

How about you?

Ditto, was taking my GCSE exams. Roller blading on the local green, going to see Boyzone at the local theatre. Didn't have a computer till 1999. We had 2 computer rooms at school. One still had the old dot matrix printers. The other had modern ones with stuff like encarta on it.

I was into my third year of being a teacher.

SecretFerret · 04/07/2025 11:13

Finished a degree and was off to work for a year before a Masters degree the following year. Lived in Cheshire and had two jobs, including working in Waterstones in Chester at the weekend. If anyone knows a Mel that also used up work in the same Waterstones, I'd love to get back in contact with her! I still remember the customer who told her young daughter not to thank the shop girls!!

Working in London. Went there to live with then boyfriend. Was living the single life in 1997 in my mid-20s. Spending all my money on rent, gigs, clubbing, partying and holidaying. What a time it was.

murasaki · 04/07/2025 11:40

2nd year of university, a lot of clubbing (mostly drum and bass and jungle), an essay a week plus language literature and history classes and one on one supervisons, orchestra, living off jacket potatoes and toasties, mostly wearing vests and combats, barely sleeping....

I remember it very fondly.

Oh yes, election night was epic. We all piled into the friend with the largest room's place, about 15 of us, and stayed up all night. It was brilliant. We were young and idealistic, and it was our first general election to vote at. Things did feel good.

Now as a jaded adult....

Looking after my new born.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/07/2025 12:11

I was a SAHM with a two and a half year old. It was a very dark time as we lost DS2 at 27 weeks in May. I have blanks about what was happening in the wider world.

Berlinlover · 04/07/2025 12:12

In a miserable relationship that I still regret to this day. It was a very sad and lonely time for me.

daddysgirlnot · 04/07/2025 12:15

Was Training as a midwife.

Celebrating the Labour election win. My Tory-voting boss threatened to sack me! As if.

TheNightingalesStarling · 04/07/2025 12:23

Starting Secondary school.
Knew no one, brand new start.

MissAmbrosia · 04/07/2025 12:28

Working at a pharmaceutical company and in process of buying a house with then boyfriend. We actually moved the day Diana died. That summer we did a coach tour round Eastern Europe. Austria and Italy. Met some great people and had huge fun in Prague, Venice, Vienna, Budapest etc.

I spent most of the year pregnant with my third (and last) child who was born in September, while juggling two toddlers. It was a busy year.

Having my dd!

ThePure · 04/07/2025 13:15

Graduating Uni. What a great time in my life. I remember hiring a canal boat with my mates after exams and gliding along playing music, singing, drinking and stopping for a swim. We were not great at steering or locks and I am sure we were a public nuisance but it was a lot of fun at the time.

Asabat · 04/07/2025 13:25

Living in Oxford and falling in love (still together). Looking back it feels like the start of my adult life. Labour got in, Diana died, moved in with boyf, started career. Was quite a year.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/07/2025 13:28

Finished my professional qualification and took a 2 year job in Papua New Guinea.
