What kind of area rug can I have with young DC?

Posted on DIY but no replies. We have an area rug basically marking out the living area zone in our open plan home. Over the past few years I’ve tried various different rugs and all have become irretrievably dirty very quickly. Due to the north facing room and lack of light, I do not want to buy a very dark coloured or black rug and if I was living here alone I would choose light cream or white as that would look the best with the decor, however realistically with young DC that’s not possible so what do people do about this? Has anyone used washable rugs or are they just a gimmick? I don’t think my rental washer dryer will fit a huge area rug anyway? Has anyone got any rug suggestions - either specific rugs or brands to go and look at which are either easy to clean or suggestions for specific rugs that don’t get dirty - is this even possible?
(We have seagrass under the dining table, but that is not soft enough for the area in the living room by the sofa because our DC often play on the floor.)
thank you!

What about a Totter and Tumble mat? I think they recently brought out an XL size of several patterns. The patterns are lovely, the mats are absolutely wonderful if you have kids playing on the floor. Wipeable, soft, insulating. One of the best things we've bought since having kids.

Thank you I’ll check those out

Maybe something like this? It’s washable and light but with a pattern. Not too expensive if it ends up stained and you need to replace once kids are older.

Totter + Tumble mats look great, they're memory foam so comfortable to sit on and easy to wipe clean
