Last night I dreamed I was watching Busman's Holiday although I haven't watched it for years! But when I woke up I had the Krypton Factor on my mind. I enjoyed both of these as a child.

I don't like these kinds of shows anymore but it git me thinking about how many I watched as a kid:

Strike it Lucky
Family Fortunes with Les Dennis
The Price is Right with Leslie Crowther
Gladiators
Blockbusters with Bob Holness
The one with a dart game but can't remember the name? The players could win a Bully?
Catchphrase
The Weakest Link

I just don't like modern shows. I watched some of Who Wants to be a Millionaire and another I can't remember.

Which ones did/do you watch?

Les Dawson hosting Blankety Blank brings back such a feeling of nostalgia for me. Saturday night lying in front of the gas fire. Chippy tea and all the family living together in our old home.

Connections with Sue Robbie.

I loved 90s game shows. Some of those I watched were:

Keynotes, which was identifying songs from one line.
Incredible Games.
Crystal Maze
Blockbusters
Fort Boyard
Knightmare: the one in which a "dungeoneer" kid was blindfolded, and superimposed into a computer-generated dungeon, and had to be guided by their team mates. This show was ground-breaking at the time.

My very Catholic grandmother used to watch Fifteen to One, and she often ranted about how little the contestants knew about Christianity. I always thought that hosts of those shows looked very severe, looking very middle-aged, sharp-suited, with big glasses, like teachers. It was the same with Bob Holness; and of course Anne Robinson played into that with the Weakest Link.

@NescafeAndIce I remember Turnabout!

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit It was called Moment of Truth, but I only watched it once, because I really loathed they way they laid it on thick with the prizes, one family member had such a massive responsibility, and the kids crying when they saw their massive prizes being taken away.

And does anyone remember Cluedo? The show had big names playing the suspects, such as June Whitfield, Richard Wilson, Joanna Lumley, who had to improvise witty answers when questioned by the contestant "detectives".

ThrowAwayHooray · 04/07/2025 07:14

You Bet - Matthew Kelly
Don’t Try This at Home - Davina McCall
Wipeout - Bob Monkhouse
Celebrity Squares - Bob Monkhouse
Price is Right - Bruce Forsyth
Play Your Cards Right - Bruce Forsyth
Finders Keepers - Neil Buchanan
Talking Telephone Numbers
Win Lose or Draw
Call My Bluff
Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook
Ready Steady Cook
Fifteen to One
Win Beadles Money
Strike It Lucky

And yes, I loved Cluedo!!!

I did but annoyingly didnt get across. i was on my own rather than in a pair

i found it was really about how quick you were on the buzzer. When I lost I knew nearly all the answers but wasn’t fast enough damn it

I always wondered about that often singletons did better then those in a pair,it must have been frustrating if your partner gave wrong answers and you knew the right answer
I watched a few very old episodes on challenge and often for those in a pair one of them was much stronger than the other

Strike It Lucky with Michael Barrymore. He was such a brilliant game show host and the contestants on there were hilarious.

Shame how he unravelled and a young man ended up losing his life.

Ooh I loved that. "Where am I??" "You're in a room...."

And Crystal Maze: "I CAN'T SEE WHAT I HAVE TO DO!!!"

Lol I'm sure there was a piss take of crystal maze maybe by some comedian who was flummoxed by a really simple task.

"bernie, the bolt' .. "The Golden shot' with Bob Monkhouse.

... I think I may be a little older than some others on here.

One of my parents friends went on the goldenshot and won a giant revolving leather chair which took pride of place in their living room.

I remember going round often as a kid and thinking how it didn't match the decor but they obviously were too attached to their prize to get rid !

Never used to like game shows much but a lot of people like my parents seemed to like 3-2-1 which was a kind of variety show and quiz show combined and a whole evenings entertainment back in the day.

@itwascousinhalifax Oh yes, Man o Man! I have a snippet of the theme tune in my head but can’t remember what the show was about?

One of my claim to fames was that I was on Granada quiz programme for kids Hold Tight, hosted by spit the dog with his sidekick Bob Carolgees. It was filmed at Alton Towers and the Bluebells and dead or alive were playing

I don't remember the programme but that sounds like a cracking day out.

Have we mentioned "It's a knockout"

And when they had the Royal Family take part

It was so bad it was good🙈

HotCrossBunplease · 04/07/2025 14:03

Wow, Busman’s holiday is a real blast form the past!

I remember that one clearly because I had never heard the phrase Busman’s holiday before and I remember my parents explaining it.

I used to love The Price is Right with Leslie Crowther. My friends and I used to mess about at school playtime pretending to be people running madly down the stairs when they got picked to “Come on down!”.

My Mum had a part time job demonstrating coffee makers and irons and stuff in our local department store, so she was really good at guessing the prices “ah yes the Rowenta Coffee-matic with 1.5 litre jug, that one will be £18.99”.

There was one called something like Punchlines that had celebrities in a grid formation, with Tom o’Connor I think.

I never liked Play Your Cards Right though, found Bruce Forsyth too weird!

JoeTheDrummer · 04/07/2025 14:27

I was a total geek as a child (still am to be fair) and while everyone else would go to the park after school to smoke & snog each other, I used to sprint home to watch Fifteen to One!

Kimwestonhelpless · 04/07/2025 15:57

I loved it's a knockout growing up in the 70s.
It definitely tainted childhood memories of it.
