Wisdom tooth infection

Hi, I went to the dentist yesterday because I have been in so much pain with my wisdom tooth and it has caused some swelling so the dentist has given me some amoxicillin to take for 5 days. Has anyone ever taken this for dental problems and how long did they take to kick in? I’ve been taking them for 24 hours now and I’m still in a lot of pain!

Hi, I had the same thing in July 2022 - for me it stopped hurting after about 48 hours! The pain was basically the same all the time until then, and then it suddenly stopped. I was also given codeine which helped a lot, it still hurt but I wasn't caring about the pain anymore cause I just felt high.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

Has the dentist talked to you about removing your wisdom teeth? If you are in pain and having infections, this is overdue and your infection, even with antibiotics can form an abscess which can be dangerous. You may need to seek a second opinion if your dentist has not been proactive.

I find it usually kicks in by the end of the first day but it can take up to 3.

Just take he full course as instructed. Everyone is different but you should feel it getting g mess painful over a few days. Some bad infections need more then one course.
But don't panic. Once the infection is clear they will be able to find a permanent solution to your issue.

@anitarielleliphe my dentist told me that if I get any trouble with it again she will refer me to the hospital, but I’m really hoping it doesn’t come to that :(

Yes.
it didn’t make much difference for me and the dentist then prescribed metronidazole (sp?) which is apparently stronger.

@xWildFlowerx that’s reassuring! I’m really hoping I start to feel some relief soon, the pain is awful 😢

@Octavia64 did metronidazole then work for you?
