What is something that is popular but is also something that you detest. It can be anything.

Picky bits - can’t fucking stand that phrase
Blake Lively - no, do not and have never got the hype. Rich nepo baby D list actress.
Love Island - trash
Dog/cats being pushed around in prams- if it has working legs, it can walk
Protein products - UPF advertised to the masses as “health” food to make a huge profit. Just eat whole foods that are high in protein.

You?

@StrikeForever if you look up videos of vocal fry you'll instantly recognise it. You often hear it in young American women's voices. Actually....maybe don't look it up because it's impossible not to notice when someone is doing it once you realise what it is! 🤣

I loathe it, it's the most grating sound in the world. Popularized by the Kardashians (who would also very much be on my list except that I don't know anyone who actually likes them!)

So far, I've agreed with pretty much everything everyone else has cited. Not sure if it's already been said, but there appears to be a popular trend for some young women to make themselves seem really dumb - like in a 'cutesy' sort of way. I've noticed it with several friends' daughters (and their friends) - whose parents are definitely NOT dumb so it's not a parenting thing.

Coming across as ditsy, being unable to use simple tools (unless it's make-up brushes and eyelash curlers), freaking out about opening a can of soda in case they break a false nail, talking CONSTANTLY about facial aesthetics and not much else, apparently not having the faintest idea about what's going on in a wider social or political context, finding it funny that you thought Portugal wasn't a European country.

It's not cute. You come across as a fucking idiot.

Edited

Yes! Especially re facial ‘aesthetics’
I read a post the other day on FB with a woman, probably American, gushing about how much in tune her new new bf was -‘he is interested in my skincare goals…’ Whaaaaaaaat? As if 😂

Tattoos

So many people have such a strong feeling towards something that has literally zero impact on their life at all

It's like me saying people with brown dyed hair.

How very peculiar

Binge viewing. I get bored shitless of most things after a couple of episodes, even my favourite programmes. Much prefer watching one episode at a time - or, very occasionally, perhaps two if the first ends on an irresistible cliff-hanger.

'Txt spk' when used by adults. It really doesn't take that much longer to spell the words out in full, especially with autocomplete/predictive text enabled. When adults use text speak they come across as illiterate teens imo. (Different if someone's dyslexic, obviously.)

Excessive emphasis on food at social functions. Obviously it's nice if there's some, but I hate the way the stampede for the buffet tends to kill interesting conversations.

In a similar vein, barbecues. Never enough seating, you're left standing juggling plate in one hand, drink in the other, how are you meant to eat? Plus the food is usually either cremated or undercooked.

And that's just reminded me of another one: spellings like BBQ and 'donuts'. cringe

Yes yes yes re bbqs

I don't like drag queens because they are basically clowns under a different name.

RaraRachael · 01/07/2025 14:41

Skincare.
People spending a fortune on stuff that makes very little difference.
Women, or even worse, little girls, watching skincare tutorials and buying expensive gunk because somebody on TikTok tells them to.

SharpLily · 01/07/2025 14:48

Oh dear. There are so many 😥.

Summer. Or hot weather at any time.
Nicole Kidman.
Kylie Minogue.
Baked beans 😱.
Coffee.
Skinny jeans.
Excusing poor grammar and spelling under the guise that 'language develops and adapts'.
So many things already mentioned such as reality TV, fake faces/nails/tan etc.
Ant and Dec.
Teeny tiny new build houses built right on top of each other in hideous, huge new estates.

Agree with everything except Kidman, coffee, and summer. For the rest you're spot on. I especially dislike excusing poor grammar. No, it's not 'regional' and the usage hasn't 'changed over time', you're just a bloody ignoramus.

I haven’t seen the other thread, but I agree that her comments are derailing this thread and that is a real shame. As you say, it is supposed to be lighthearted. We should all just stop engaging with these posts of hers.

The thread has 16 pages but you pick out my comments. I’m not alone in disliking tattoos as evident on this thread. Go bully elsewhere.

You are being a bit silly aren’t you. Yes. Many posters, including me, have said they don’t like tattoos, but only you have lectured about why they are objectively horrible.

Musicals

All of them

Particularly that bit in the dialogue when you can see they are building up to yet another bloody song

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/07/2025 15:59

Correctional facility-chic flat grey paint on everything. Still! In fact it feels like people are desperately trying to make grey versions of everything possible for a house. That dark grey stain on fences is so depressing to look at.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/07/2025 16:01

Walking down a quiet country lane shouting into your phone. No I don’t want to hear what you said to your boss about the Mac todger contract whilst I am peacefully weeding my front garden. The blackbird doesn’t want to be drowned out by you either.

I remember when talking to yourself in a loud and irrelevant way would have brought out the men in white coats, and they were not wrong.

Nah its not the pp with the bully behaviour

Its odd to have such a strong opinion on something you are obviously never going to be impacted by.

GameOfJones · 01/07/2025 16:33

Salted caramel.

Cake..... Usually dry or overly sweet and a complete waste of calories!

Lip filler. Have you seen the young girls (and some of the guys) on Glow Up this year? 😱

Anthracite grey windows on red brick houses. It looks bloody awful.

CatsArePeople · 01/07/2025 17:05

I think it becomes a habit for some. It’s a croaky, growly voice register which can be a sign of tiredness in some people but is definitely an affectation in others, particularly young American women of the influencer variety.

i first noticed it in the most recent version of A Star is Born - Bradley. Cooper talks in vf for the entire film! I found it really irritating and monotonous.

Overly violent films and telly. Ditto films and telly with a lot of swearing and shouting.
