I just need to vent as I feel so terrible. Driving to work this morning a pigeon flew out in front of my car and I hit it, feathers flew everywhere. I always stop and swerve wildlife but there was really nothing I could do here, it was instant. I didn’t stop either which is making me feel worse, I’m hoping it was a quick death.

Ive made a donation to a pigeon related charity, but I feel so bad. Am 17 weeks pregnant as well so super hormonal ☹️ just needed to vent x

As you said, there was nothing you could do. These things happen. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Fringle · 30/06/2025 14:55

Pigeons are vermin. You did everyone a favour.

I volunteer with a pigeon charity - they will wholeheartedly appreciate your donation.

You did nothing wrong, it was an accident, it will have died instantly and not known a thing about it. Nothing more you could have done if you stopped, and you may actually have put yourself in danger from other traffic if you had stopped.

It will have given you a shock but you’ve done something kind in response, give yourself a break.

I didn’t even conceive there could a charity for pigeons!

BigFatBully · 30/06/2025 15:02

If it didn't go under the wheels, it might still be alive. A call to the RSPCA could prevent its suffering.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/06/2025 15:17

Dick Dastardly would be proud of you OP

Thats a disgusting thing to say.
They are living creatures.

I sympathise OP. We once had a small bird blown into our windscreen on a really windy day and it couldnt have survived. As bird lovers we really distressed but it was an accident and nothing we could have done.

Only feral pigeons, not your normal wood pigeon.

I understand what you say. But, for example, rats and mice are also vermin. They’re killed routinely by householders or pest controllers. Pigeons are really no different (though I believe pest control for them is more restrictive.)

But there are plenty of signs around saying not to feed pigeons because they make such a mess and are a health hazard. There are two spots in my neighbourhood that have those signs.
