How do I tell when my melon is ripe?

I got a free melon from Ocado. I tried googling how to tell if a honeydew melon is ripe, but whilst it is yellow, pressing on the end doesn't seem to have give. Please can anyone advise how to tell if it is ripe? Will it continue to ripen after it's been cut into - I think it has to go in the fridge then, at the moment it's on the side.

If the end opposite the stalk doesn't give, it's not ripe yet. Leave it in a sunny spot for a few days and keep trying. Don't cut it yet, it won't ripen, and it doesn't need to go in the fridge until it's cut.

Smell it. A ripe melon has a strong sweet smell. Unripe melon smells of nowt.
