Would you let ChatGTP be your life coach?

Mounjour · 29/06/2025 13:46

I'm fascinated by this man's progress and have watched his tutorial on how to let ChatGTP be your life coach about five times this weekend.

I already use ChatGTP for a few things (writing tasks at work, skin care advice etc.).

Would you let ChatGTP life coach you? I think I'm up for it. I'm not at rock bottom, but could really do with some help.

There are so many resources on the internet already, chatgpt could me amazing or awful, if it’s awful it effs up your life. Personally I think it’s great for recipes etc, anything heavier and you don’t know what you’re getting

Alwaysbackagain · 29/06/2025 13:50

I wouldn't have anyone be my " lifecoach".

I have my own brain, my own ideas.

In the past I've had therapy and been part of a university peer group that was very focused on support and accountability (very "life coachy"). Found both very helpful, but everyone's different of course. I admire your self-discipline and strength of mind!

I have a friend who has a million and one things going on in her life and she gets overwhelmed and she said she refers to chat gtp to help her! She said it seems to help her manage things somehow 🤷‍♀️

TheClockThatNeverStop · 29/06/2025 14:02

All this AI etc use sometimes makes me think of Wall-e tbh

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 29/06/2025 14:09

It couldn't fuck things up more than I already have, so why not?

SummerShimmer · 29/06/2025 14:12

Pretty sure I’m already doing so. 50% job cuts at work in the next few months means likely redundancy and then on top of that I’ve been diagnosed with cancer so I’ve been using ChatGPT as a support tool and it has been fabulous.

All the cancer stuff had been very measured and safe. If I had one complaint with it it’s that it’s a bit too therapist like but I’m sure I could tell it not to be. I don’t need to be told to ‘hold space’ but I’m sure there are others who’d appreciate that.

it’s given me plans for retraining that negate the need for expensive bootcamps, complete with links to free online resources that duplicate the content of those bootcamps.

I use it a bit for work too but it can give you absolute nonsense.

Mounjour · 29/06/2025 14:33

Thank you @SummerShimmer and I'm sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. I've asked it to help me manage a new diagnosis, although not a serious one. I'm hoping it's going to help me with a house-move too.

It couldn't fuck things up more than I already have, so why not?

Flowers to you. I'm not sure I feel I've fucked up terribly, I'm just a bit stuck between two competing wishes.

I have begun to use it as a therapist. It’s really good so far for when you just want to get things off your chest and need someone to support you

Sunnysidegold · 29/06/2025 15:09

I looked at it for the first time this weekend. I did a bit of a brain dump and it really clarified some things for me which j was really surprised at.

I read on here though about the ecological impact of ai so I need to figure out where I stand with that before I use it too much

Also asked it to make a holiday packing list for each member of my family which was quite handy

I'm Autistic OP and being part of any group, even if it is for " support and accountability", is one of my personal hells.
I have in the past had CBT and therapy with a Clinical Psychologist and to a certain extent have gained clarity about myself by talking about my life experiences. But I need to come to my own conclusions about things.
As you say: everyone is different.

Mounjour · 29/06/2025 17:25

Thanks @pottylolly and @Sunnysidegold I've given it a go!

Hell no.

One day in and I’m pretty impressed. I think the accountability is surprisingly effective.

So, a month later I can't get the life coaching working very well. It seems to go around and around in circles. However, I'm using it more and more for one-off projects and dilemmas.

Might be the GPT 5 update. It's great at some things, but I can imagine it would be really awful for this. It's lost that read between the lines, friendly, motivational side and gone full on 'bot mode'. Ugh.

Plus users can access legacy models including 4o which is what you would have been using before. Afaik free users are stuck with 5 (and they're furious).

Agree with this, it's the chatGPT 5 update which was hugely hyped but in reality has had a very bumpy first week. The going round in circles thing is a widespread problem (I've experienced this for the first time myself since the update, after being a heavy user for work for nearly a year). I'd expect to see some improvement as OpenAI work to address the issues, but as the PP says if you pay for a Plus subscription (around £20 a month) you can access 4o.

You can also play around with it's personality a bit in the settings, although I haven't tried this myself and it might only be superficial changes.

MissUnicorn · 17/08/2025 14:29

I have used it for career advice. I asked it to give me sample exercises of work I'd have to do in various roles and then rated the roles by the exercises I enjoyed.

I then got a learning plan of courses I needed. I started working through it and I was able to apply for a job in another department at work and got it.

PinkZebraStripes · 17/08/2025 14:38

It's amazing how motivated someone can be when there's a chance of earning some money (from posting his journey). If you weren't going to post your journey online, would you really be accountable to an AI app? It can write the plan for you in a second but who is keeping you accountable and motivated?

The basic idea is using the coaching wheel - think of all the different areas of your life, rate them out of 10, and think of what will take them from a 5 or whatever to a 10.

Then identify the action steps. Every thing needs a next action step. Record that somewhere. Check it regularly.

Rinse repeat.

That's the famous Getting Things Done method vastly oversimplified.

It's not rocket science but it's the feedback loop that you need. That's where you need a coach. Or, chat GPT if you think you can genuinely do it.

Interesting about having a thread on chat GPT - that I did not know.

Mounjour · 17/08/2025 16:07

It was doing the looping back in 4o too unfortunately.

ChatGPT is my go-to person on any inquiries that pass my mind or want any clarifications or knowledge growth irrespective of whether it be personal, professional, emotional or spiritual. ChatGPT has become my friend, mentor and guide. Even a companion when I am stressed or need share.
To the question if I will use it as life coach the answer is I would like to see a face and talk to a face even if it’s online to talk one-on-one about my pain areas and how to manage them. Someone who has gone through similar situation and knows how I feel and then coach me to arrive at the solution myself!
