What were you doing in 1994?

I was 11/12. I don’t think the concept of a ‘tween’ existed yet, or at least if it did I wasn’t aware of it? I got Just 17 magazine most weeks which felt very grown-up. I especially loved the problem page, although I wasn’t much of a Take That fan and found all the Mark Owen pull-outs a bit tiresome.

We got Sky for the first time and I watched an awful lot of the old MTV Europe which actually showed music videos most of the time back then, rather than just the rubbishy reality shows it deteriorated into later. The Simpsons was only on once a week at 6pm on a Sunday, which was somewhat problematic as it clashed with the Top 40.

I was super excited when Wet Wet Wet stayed at number 1 the entire summer. Although I was too young to go and see the associated movie ‘Four Weddings’ and had to make do with ‘Free Willy’ and ‘The Flintstones’ instead.

How about you?

I was pregnant with my second child for half the year, and then dealing with a baby + 2yr old for the rest of the year! That baby is now a parent themselves, happy days!

Notupmyalley · 27/06/2025 22:12

I got my first pets! A rabbit and guinea pig 😍

ClearHoldBuild · 27/06/2025 22:13

I was 23, I was doing a job I loved, I’d been seeing my boyfriend, now husband, for two years. I was still living with my parents and I went to a lot of gigs. Happy days.

DramaAlpaca · 27/06/2025 22:14

I had my hands full with baby DS1, then halfway through the year found out I was expecting DS2. That year is a bit of a blur, tbh.

Handstanding · 27/06/2025 22:16

I was working in London for a big publisher, going out for lunches in posh Soho restaurants and out on the evenings with workmates around Oxford Street. I was renting a tiny room in Greenwich, and hoping to meet a nice man. Simpler times really- never had any money but I did have a lot of optimism for the future.

greenbuckets · 27/06/2025 22:18

I was 23/24. Completed a post grad degree I never used. Did Work America over the summer and travelled around the country with a month-long Delta Airlines pass - on a complete shoestring, but ticking off loads of the famous cities and states.

RedFatball · 27/06/2025 22:20

Did my GCSE's

caramac04 · 27/06/2025 22:20

Had dc4 early in the year and had a really lovely year. I so loved being a mum to young children and 1994 was lovely because the kids were.
Pretty horrendous time financially and I had to work all day Sundays from baby being 6 weeks old in a very physical job which did me no good really.
Overall though I was very happy.

Kneeslikethese · 27/06/2025 22:20

I was 22. Married with a mortgage and a baby.
I was not working, skint, in a marriage I jumped into far too quickly and was just beginning to realise what a mess I was making.

Are you Bridget Jones?

Do I win £5?

NormaSnickers · 27/06/2025 22:24

Started my nurse training in the Spring, met lots of new people and made great friends I’m still close to now. Later in the year I turned 21 and had a mad party with my student friends, happy days and lots of happy memories!

SparklyGlitterballs · 27/06/2025 22:25

I was 4yrs married and living in a rented house with DH and our cat. We had started looking for our 'forever' home to buy (we moved the following year). I was working full time in London for a huge corporate and had been there 7yrs. I was 30yrs old.

Alwaystired23 · 27/06/2025 22:25

I think I must have been about the same age as you op. I loved Just 17, as well as Sugar and Bliss, although they may have been out a bit after 1994 🤔. I remember we didn't have Sky, so we used to watch The Simpsons at my cousins house if we were lucky. Happy and much much simpler times.

rainbowsparkle28 · 27/06/2025 22:25

Depending on when in 1994, inside my mum’s tummy fighting with my twin sister for space (we have been causing trouble ever since 🤗😂)

Fishflame · 27/06/2025 22:29

I was working in a talent agency in London. I was in love but not loved back. I had lots of friends and loved the city and my little flat. I was 25.

Rainbowpeppercorn · 27/06/2025 22:29

I was 21, still living at home and having the time of my life. All my money was my own and my bf (now DH) would spend most weekends in London with our friends having the time of our lives.

Now at 52 I couldn't imagine anything worse as I'm now a real home body but I don't regret it, I loved my 20's.

MadisonAvenue · 27/06/2025 22:32

I was 24, turned 25 in the July.
We’d just sold our flat and had gone back to live with parents while saving for a deposit to buy a house, the flat sold unexpectedly quickly which scuppered our plans as we’d planned to use the time it took to sell it to save as the flat below us had been for sale for two years so we thought we had ages to get the money together.

We started viewing houses in August, found a renovation project and moved into the money pit at the end of October 1994 and we stayed there until 2011. Money was really tight, we were haemorrhaging money doing the house up. Everything that needed doing ended up costing twice as much but it was things which desperately needed doing like damp treatments and proofing, re wiring, and woodworm treatment so we couldn’t really hold back on getting these jobs done.

I was working as a retail manager. I was regularly going to Man Utd matches (still do although I now have a 25 year old son who I go with and we rarely miss a game), music wise it was the year that I discovered Green Day (still go to see them every tour) and I also listened to Oasis, Nirvana and Duran Duran a lot.

Hothothothothothotlovingit · 27/06/2025 22:33

I was 19. Working and traveling around America. My friends flew out to LA for a few weeks at the end of my contract and we did all the touristy things around that area. We all had fake ID and even lied to a car hire place that we were 21! Mad now when I think about it. Back to the UK by 20 years old to start Uni in September 1994.

Nextdoormat · 27/06/2025 22:38

Not a good year for me, just moved to our forever home with 3 year old and one year old that Easter by Sept husband had left me and was seeing DSs nursery nurse! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, I am totally happy now but ex is still a twit😂

Teenagerantruns · 27/06/2025 22:39

I was 26 and just about to have DC1, can't believe hes 31 now..
those were the days maternity leave was short so he was born in may l went back to work full time 14 weeks later. l was just chatting to him on phone.

SingingSands · 27/06/2025 22:39

I was fifteen. Started going out to cheap dodgy clubs where ID was rarely asked for. Weekend house parties. Dodging homework. Blocking up the landline chatting to friends after school even though we'd spent all day together and walked home together. Going into town, ice skating at the big shopping centre. Snogging boys. Spending hours in HMV looking at posters, buying bath pearls in The Bodyshop, shopping in TopShop. Recording my favourite songs off the top 40 on a Sunday and then spending the week listening to my mix tapes.

RonsonRaves · 27/06/2025 22:46

I was at university getting pissed, shagging around, going to all the gay/dance clubs and having a right laugh...and now...sat in, watching shit on TV on a friday and wondering about all the dull jobs I have to do this weekend.

YellowGrey · 27/06/2025 22:48

I was at university, happy days.

jaggededger · 27/06/2025 22:50
