What were you doing in 1994?

I was 11/12. I don’t think the concept of a ‘tween’ existed yet, or at least if it did I wasn’t aware of it? I got Just 17 magazine most weeks which felt very grown-up. I especially loved the problem page, although I wasn’t much of a Take That fan and found all the Mark Owen pull-outs a bit tiresome.

We got Sky for the first time and I watched an awful lot of the old MTV Europe which actually showed music videos most of the time back then, rather than just the rubbishy reality shows it deteriorated into later. The Simpsons was only on once a week at 6pm on a Sunday, which was somewhat problematic as it clashed with the Top 40.

I was super excited when Wet Wet Wet stayed at number 1 the entire summer. Although I was too young to go and see the associated movie ‘Four Weddings’ and had to make do with ‘Free Willy’ and ‘The Flintstones’ instead.

How about you?

I was 10. We moved overseas and I hated it. Never really forgave my parents! (where we moved to was miserable, isolated and very very cold!).

Newlysinglemumma · 28/06/2025 04:54

I was being born! Well in June 1994! I’d say it was a good year 🤣

typicaltuesdaynight · 28/06/2025 04:58

I moved out of my parents and moved a 2 hour drive away to a city with my boyfriend now dh I was 19/20 and got engaged . Life was a lot of fun even though we were very poor. But a huge adventure , I do miss theses days even though we are still happily married with our own house now and kids

GCSEs
left school
first job
first “love”

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 28/06/2025 06:06

Did my GCSEs, came out with good grades, though I needed to retake Maths, but that turned out ok. Started a Btec National Diploma in Nursery Nursing.

My paternal Nan was dying of cancer. It was long and drawn out. It started me thinking about dignity in dying, about my struggle with religion, and I had some dark thoughts around that time. Four years previously I saw my maternal grandad die a long horrible death, and in my future I will see how terrible end of life care can be for my two remaining grandparents. I remain resolved in how I will do everything I can to avoid a similar fate.

It was one of the worst years of my life, I was taking GCSEs, which I was no good at, there was a huge breakdown between me and my parents after years of emotional abuse & no time spent focusing on my needs, due to having an older sister with a range of special needs.

It is because of this (and because of what happened mostly in this year) that I have so much understanding of older people who can't come to terms with how far society has come in terms of recognizing neurodiversity, because you know, life was one hell of a struggle for so many of us back then and we had no choice but to find ways to cope.

One thing I do miss from this period is the fashion for bright and bold colours in the home. Homes were very cheerful places and people had a lot of choice, so as to be individual. These days "fashion" only seems to consist of one thing at a time.

Also, I can't quite believe it was 31 years ago...it feels like six months.

Yes I think we had a different coloured carpet in every room then. Dark pink for me and blue for my brother with wallpapers to match.

Now our walls are all painted an off white with grey carpets throughout.

University, studying hard, enjoying life.

TakeMe2Insanity · 28/06/2025 06:29

Probably just finished my A levels, then the panic/anticipation of where I’d go to university!

Onelifeonly · 28/06/2025 06:33

Trying for a baby. Being part of my sister's wedding. Loving Four Weddings and a Funeral. Liking my job better as we got a new boss.

ItsCalledAConversation · 28/06/2025 06:39

I was in year 8, wearing a cropped T-shirt that said “brat”. I see that’s come back around again!

Rancor · 28/06/2025 06:42

I was 3 going on 4. My day consisted of tagging along for the school run. I may have gone to Playgroup (I had separation anxiety from my mum so I'm not sure if I was at this point🤔). I did Tumble Tots, which was a lot of fun! We had a pet cat, my first animal love!

Daffodilsarefading · 28/06/2025 06:50

I got married to my first husband. Went to lots of weddings that year. Went on honeymoon. The dj we had booked for our evening do was ill so he sent his friend. The friend ignored our play list and instead of playing our requested song for our first dance, he played the theme song from Four Weddings and a Funeral. We asked him to play the song we wanted and he replied that he didn’t have it! He carried on playing exactly what he wanted all evening instead of songs we had agreed on.
The marriage lasted 20 years. I’m now with someone who I’m far more suited to.

I was 15 and just enjoying life, being with my friends at my (single sex) local state school, the spectre of GCSEs hanging in the air!

I played two sports competitively & to a high level so was occupied with regular training sessions & matches that gave me little time to ‘hang out’ in the local shopping centre but I loved my shopping trips with friends when I was free

On a Sunday looking forward to the music top 40 count down, waiting for that moment to press record to add to my mix tape!

Boys on the horizon, but ‘snogging’ later that year when I was in year 11 (had turned 16 over the summer)

Ahhh the 90s how I miss you ❤️

I think I must have been about the same age as you op. I loved Just 17, as well as Sugar and Bliss, although they may have been out a bit after 1994 🤔. I remember we didn't have Sky, so we used to watch The Simpsons at my cousins house if we were lucky. Happy and much much simpler times.

Just checked and Sugar first came out in October 1994. If you collected all 12 editions from the first year, you could send off for a display case to keep them in - a marketing ploy I was totally oblivious to at the time. I got this but I think I stopped reading shortly after. I was 13.5 by then and I think starting to consider myself a bit beyond teen magazines. I seem to recall that Sugar had the best fashion coverage of them all. Just 17 had lots on sex and visiting Brook Advisory Centres which I’d sometimes have a snigger at, although it was all good responsible info. Bliss and Mizz I don’t remember so well?

I was born!

I was 2!

didgeridid · 28/06/2025 07:01

I was about 7 so I assume I was making dances up to Ace of Base and perfecting my Cottone Eye Joe barn dance

FlatErica · 28/06/2025 07:06

I was doing my second degree and working on evenings and weekends in a bookshop to support myself. I was also enjoying the early days of the web! Hanging around on usenet sites, Bianca’s and Paddynet!

I was 10, just starting to get into pop music. Whigfield’s “Saturday Night” was my favourite and I got a copy of Now 29 for my birthday.

I remember that so well! Those Now albums were great. I used to get so excited for them to come out.

I had just finished a fantastic four years of university and was so sad to leave. Had a job and moved back home. I found living at home again really hard. Went out with my bf (now dh) every weekend to the local nightclub and got drunk! Fun times!

Gowlett · 28/06/2025 07:38

I was 18, getting ready to leave school. First stop, London!

ChilliChoco · 28/06/2025 07:40

I remember that summer so well. I was at university and had a job in central London with lots of other university students. I met lots of gorgeous men, who wined and dined me. It was a fun time

Paddynet! I’d forgotten all about that!

CarrieonCarrieanne · 28/06/2025 08:11

I was at sixth form and loving life! It was the grunge era and we all dressed in little dresses and great big boots, or ripped jeans and checked shirts. Smoked Marlboro lights and drank Newcastle Brown Ale while listening to Nirvana. That was the time I felt most free and content with my life.

What was your username? I was Jude! I’m afraid I trolled an American Christian woman called Carrot quite a lot.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/06/2025 14:51

It was the year I got married.
