Undercut?

I’ll be 40 this year and am undergoing an absolutely brutal divorce. I’ve lost 25kg and still going with that, and it’s making me feel like a different person. First court date for children is next month and I have hair etc all booked to help me feel armoured for this. And I’m starting to think about changing my hair ever so slightly for the first time ever. It’s v v fine and fluffy and I always tuck it behind my ears, and don’t ever put it up. Would a slight undercut on my right hand side work or lean into tragic cliche? Is this super dated? Will I regret it? Any advice welcomed 🙏

Can you post a pic of said cut you are thinking of? I googled undercut and I got a number of different types...

Buscake · 25/06/2025 20:43

I guess something like this? Very out of my depth with any kind of changes to how I look

Oh I seeee. Smile Yes I did get that one on my google search.

That's OK, but I think I prefer the shorter one. There's loads on here. Go for it, if it's what you want. I imagine it will suit you. Smile

Ooh love it, I always wanted this. One of my friends has it and she always looks really pretty and twinkly with it.

You need to have a specific style and length in mind (and also ideally quite thick hair). That said, if you feel you've made a mistake, it grows quickly.

This was my DD's inspiration 12 months ago. She was 12 at the time and is still rocking the look and loving it a year later.

Best of luck with everything, and if nowt else, it sounds like you're better off without the ex. Also we'll done with the weight loss.

I'd say go for it - I think it would work with your hair type and would make you feel fierce :) and it's easy enough to hide/grow out if not. Good luck with the court stuff.

Thank you all for the encouragement and advice. My hair is soo fine so I do worry it might make my head look unbalanced 😂

I was in the relationship for 20+ years and I do feel lost and not knowing who I am. So I’m trying new things. The only problem is that this isn’t something I can quickly undo. Appreciate the support for the court crap too, it’s been a nightmare with more to come but your words make a difference; thank you

I have an undercut but only at the back - I couldn’t really age a wide one in my job. With my hair down you can’t see it. Just the rear could be a lower risk way of starting.

Thelnebriati · 25/06/2025 21:48

If you have the Miley style undercut with your hair piled on top, your hair will bob around every time your head moves. If you are in court, it will show if you feel nervous.
And secondly if you have fine hair, you need to work out how much hair you will have left to hang down, mine is fine and I ended up with some straggly strands, it looked awful (google 'National Socialist haircut' for an idea of how bad it was) and I ended up with a buzzcut that took ages to grow out.
With fine hair you would probably be better off with the undercut pixie cut posted by RainbowZebraWarrior, maybe with a bit of a wave to give it body.

RumNotRun · 25/06/2025 22:12

I've got really fine hair too and a few years ago I decided to cut it all off. I've had it kind of like Miley, like the woman in @RainbowZebraWarrior's post, and various lengths and styles in between. When I had the Miley style, it made my hair look thicker and was so easy to deal with. I now have an undercut all round but am growing the back out (so I currently have a mullet!) as I want to be able to plait my hair.

Go for it, it's hair, it grows back. Well done on all you've achieved, why not try something else new? 😁

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 25/06/2025 23:31

I'm 44 and have had one for years- a number 2 like Miley's.

I actually have it because my hair is stupidly thick and it makes it more manageable. I still love it, even if it is mostly functional.

My hair looks thinner with it, so I would be careful if you have fine hair. My hair is still very thick by normal standards but it did make it a lot thinner than it was.

Buscake · 26/06/2025 19:13

I appreciate all the input. ESP thinking about how not thick my hair is! I’m going to try to be brave and see what my hairdresser says tomorrow. Unless it’s unequivocal positivity I will probably chicken out! But it feels empowering being able to try these things out even if only in my head :) thanks all
