Totally misunderstood song lyrics!

I love the song Doo Wop (that thing) by Lauren Hill, in fact the whole album is brilliant and I've listened to it for years.
But I've just seen the actual lyrics written down for the first time and it's TOTALLY not what I thought it was. I've sung the song loud and proud many times but completely wrong.

I genuinely thought the chorus goes "girl, some girls had only watch out / cos guys will only want to wop out that thing, that thing, that thi-i-i-ing"!!

OMG! I thought it was warning girls that some guys like to, er, 'wop out' their 'thing' !! 😂😂

Anyone got any others so I feel slightly less ashamed??

So many!

Toto, Africa: "There's nothing that a hundred men on mars could ever do" (Correct lyrics: "...a hundred men or more could ever do.")

Shania Twain, That Don't Impress Me Much: "I can't believe you kiss your cock at night." (Correct lyrics: "I can't believe you kiss your car goodnight".)

There are more. I too loudly and proudly sing incorrect lyrics to many songs.

This shows my age! Silver Lady by David Soul. I cheerfully sang, 'I'm lost and alone - shift to the phone, Silver Lady'. I thought he wanted her to pick up his calls.

It's apparently, 'I'm lost and alone - chilled to the bone'...

And the last known survivor was this brave little knight
And he's watching us all with the eye of the tiger

I always thought Seal was singing about a kiss from a Rose on a grave!

We were watching the Isle of Wight festival in TV over the weekend.

Now I'm a bit of a swearer, but DP was looking at me really funny during the Paul Heaton (of Beautiful South fame) set as I was singing along to 'Don't Marry Her'.

The chorus is 'Don't marry her. Fuck me', which me at home and the crowd at the festival were heartily singing along with.

Dp asked why I was singing that - he must have only ever heard on the song on his favourite Radio 2. We checked the lyrics and it's there in black and white

Your more than a number in my little black book. Just found out last night its red book...

I've always thought that too! Aren't they saying that? I'll have to look them up.

Me too. What is it meant to be?

murasaki · 26/06/2025 14:31

Me too.

Crojo · 26/06/2025 14:36

I’m glad it wasn’t just me then 😂 It’s kiss from a rose on the grey

murasaki · 26/06/2025 14:39

Well that makes less sense than a grave!

Apparently Seal was recently asked what the hell the lyrics meant & he said "I've spent 30 years avoiding having to explain the lyrics, I'm not about to start now"!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/06/2025 15:15

Apparently Johnny did not work on the docks at all, but his friend Tommy did. Almost 40 years of my life singing about poor Johnny's difficult job and he didn't even work there.

columnatedruinsdomino · 26/06/2025 15:21

Do it Again by the Beach Boys 'It's old and magic when I talk with dolphins' is apparently 'It's automatic when I talk with old friends'. I prefer the dolphins myself.

NazeLife · 26/06/2025 15:29

Only found out a few weeks ago, because it was playing on Amazon music on the TV with the lyrics up, that it's not "you'd better not kill the groom" but "groove"
Have been singing groom confidently since the song came out. I really thought it was about a wedding and people dancing and someone wanting to kill the groom.

BeeGees.

It's not "... How deep is your love, I really need to know"

It's actually "... How deep is your love, I really mean to learn"

Mind blown when I found that out.

!!! I had to check.
I don’t think I’ll ever sing this right

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/06/2025 16:33

Caught some of Pop Master the other night and Ken Bruce was reading out lyrics for them to guess songs. I learnt that Meatloaf is singing “I’m crying icicles instead of tears” and not “I’m crying I suppose instead of tears”. Just presumed he was a bit half arsed about his relationship!

My Sister thought the lyrics were ‘I know you rise with the morning sun’ 😂

At one time I thought it was you kiss your carving knife for the Shania twain song.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/06/2025 18:56

@ScupperedbytheSea mind also blown!!

Another one I read on MN that blew my mind... In Carlys Simons 'you're so vain' he had one eye in the mirror as he watched himself gavotte. I was absolutely certain it was "go by' but if you listen it's quite clearly 'gavotte'. I have asked many many people about this and they all misheard the same as me.

Helpmechooseausername · 26/06/2025 22:12

😂 glad it's not just me! Worryingly, reading this thread has made me realise I've been singing a LOT of songs wrong 😂
Ah, at least we're all singing along in life!!
