Would you bother reporting a flasher?

Dropped my 14 yr old Dd at dance tonight, parked up and a man crosses the road, stops directly behind my car, and gets his knob out (I was looking through rear view mirror).

I got out and basically told him to fuck off, which he did, there were a couple of people further up the road, but when I asked, they hadn't seen anything. I then just got on with my day. I didn't consider reporting it until I messaged DH who asked if I had. I have now filled in an online police report, but not sure what they can do really.

But, it got me thinking, if this happened/has happened to you, did you/would you report it?

I probably would now but didn't a couple of men in my younger years. I did once report a guy on a motorway bridge flashing.

MyQuirkyTraybake · 24/06/2025 21:55

No because I've reported worse to the police in the past and they did nothing, just closed the case.

IsItTheBlackOneOrTheRedOne · 24/06/2025 21:58

Oh god yes we should always report it. However in the six or ten times in my life I’ve been flashed / wanked at, I have never once gone to the police. When you’re young it almost feels like an inevitable part of life

BoudiccaRuled · 24/06/2025 21:58

Hasn't happened to me since I got old and warty recently, but no, I never told the police in the past. I had the joyous experience in the UK, France and Spain, yay! Go me 😐

StarDolphins · 24/06/2025 22:06

There’s been 4 flashing g incidents in my small town within the last 10 days, 3 different descriptions.

What is wrong with all these perverts?!

mindutopia · 24/06/2025 22:08

Yes definitely. I would have taken a photo and posted it to our local facebook to identify him along with reporting.

Knneal · 24/06/2025 22:09

No I wouldn't. I had a bad experience of reporting a sexual assault in the past so I wouldn't waste my time now. And I would not be prepared to be a witness in court.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 24/06/2025 22:15

Yes.
I also recommend the Indecent Exposure episode of It's A Fair Cop about this.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 24/06/2025 22:18

Series 6. Episode 5.

Nackyposter · 24/06/2025 22:18

Absolutely yes. Having said that, when I was a kid, a lorry driver flashed me. It was years later that I realised it was a penis I saw.

ScurryHurry · 24/06/2025 22:19

Just got a call from the police who have asked me to go to the station on Friday, so it seems they are taking it seriously. Was a little surprised to get a call at this time, I was just getting into my pjs. Lovely policeman on the phone though.

Yes 100%.

They often escalate in their behaviour.

That's my understanding too.

they have been a lot more on the ball with flashers since Sarah Everard. It’s also possible they saw some CCTV nearby. Would not surprise me if the guy has previous if they manage to track him down. He may be a known sex offender. Unfortunately hardly any go to prison unless they have already been there.

Guavafish1 · 24/06/2025 22:33

These people are the most deplorable sexual offenders

MumofSpud · 24/06/2025 22:35

So my DD reported a flasher - she was driving - stopped at lights and he was at a bus stop. It was quiet - late evening
She gave a good description to the police (she didn’t confront him but rang as she was a bit away).
She heard nothing back.
Then a couple of months later there was a photo fit on the news of a man wanted for an attack on a woman - it was the same area at a bus stop and the description was the same as DD saw.
She rang the number given and never heard anything back either!

This is shocking!

I have been flashed at several times and always just rolled my eyes and got on with my day. My thinking was to almost feel sorry for the flashers as seemed so pathetic at the time. However, I agree with the posters who think the behaviour might escalate so probably would report it now I am
aware of that.

CeliaInside · 24/06/2025 22:46

Yes, definitely. This happened to me three times when I was between ten and thirteen. I didn’t tell anyone at the time but I would now because I wouldn’t be able to put it out of my mind that they could do it to a kid/ teenager next.
They were all really horrible experiences. Once when me and my friend were sitting on a wall talking in the evening, a man in a car pulled up beside us. He had the window down and started calling us over asking for directions. He was naked below the waist and masturbating. We were ten and eleven years old.

Kimwestonhelpless · 24/06/2025 22:48

Well done on reporting op as it's been said by many pp the behaviour can escalate.
Hopefully the police catch him.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 24/06/2025 22:51

Yes, as flashing is often the start to worse sexual deviant behaviour.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 24/06/2025 22:51

Absolutely report. Every time.

Sad, pathetic, little bastards who get off on exposing their bits. I mean, do they think we find it anything but disgusting?

Jamesblonde2 · 24/06/2025 22:52

Yes, the police can then have information and details for if it happens again (might have done so already) or if it escalates. I’ve known similar end up in the local newspaper, encouraging women to report. Dirty sod!

Katkins17 · 24/06/2025 22:53

Absolutely report. It’s an entry level assault….these creeps more often than not escalate their behaviour when the thrill of flashing doesn’t ’hit their perv spot’ any more.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 24/06/2025 22:56

I’ve seen three flashers in my life and reported all of them. They often move on to more serious crimes so it’s advisable to report.

Itallcomesdowntothis · 24/06/2025 23:03

I would probably have said before but have changed my mind completely now.

A close friend had this happen on a run. A guy in a field did this and she reported it. Two months later he was arrested for sexual assault. She was asked to potentially be a witness.

So it’s true they can escalate and it lets the police know.

Repot immediately.
