Would you bother reporting a flasher?

Dropped my 14 yr old Dd at dance tonight, parked up and a man crosses the road, stops directly behind my car, and gets his knob out (I was looking through rear view mirror).

I got out and basically told him to fuck off, which he did, there were a couple of people further up the road, but when I asked, they hadn't seen anything. I then just got on with my day. I didn't consider reporting it until I messaged DH who asked if I had. I have now filled in an online police report, but not sure what they can do really.

But, it got me thinking, if this happened/has happened to you, did you/would you report it?

I reported someone who flashed and masturbated in front of me when I was younger. It often escalates, just look at the freak that killed Sarah Everard.

DelboytrottersDnecklace · 24/06/2025 20:19

I was once flashed in the local church grounds when I was walking a friends dog

He ran off when the dog went mental at him

I work in a drive thru and it happens at least once a month (if they see a female, some men pull it out to wave it at us,I warn the girls who start, but they never believe me until it happens)

Management do everything they can-number plates and colour/make of the car etc

Police do nothing, they just shrug it off as 'a hazard of the job'

I feel we have a right to do our jobs without having a penis waved at us

Church man was around the time sarah Everard was murdered and I've worked at the drive thru for almost 10 years

He might already be known to the police and might already be on the sex offenders register. If they aren’t informed then they can’t do much.
He might not be known, he might go on to offend but they won’t know that this has happened in the past.

The only way to manage risk is to be aware of it.

Bit mad that someone flashed near your daughter, outside of a leisure activity and you didn’t think to report it Hmm

I think I didn't think to report it, as I know I wouldn't be able to recognise the man again, but then after messaging DH and realising there could potentially be door cam footage I decided to report online.

The only other time I had something similar happen was when I was 18 working in a gift shop, a man came in and started masturbating behind a shelf. I did call the police that time who came and drove me around the small town to see if I could spot him, which we didn't.

I did when it happened to me. I made it very clear to the police that I was reporting it because it happened yards from a primary school.

It'd be a real shame if you spilt a boiling hot cup of McTea in their lap out of shock

AnSolas · 24/06/2025 20:23

Yes

In your case he is sex offending in public for the thrill of sex offending in public.

He picked an area he knows will have young girls gathering /pass through to attending dance classes and may have mums parking up for the duration of the classes.

In your case you could have has a younger child in the car too.

As PP said public sex offenders can decide to engaging in direct contact sex offences eg sexual assaults or rapes etc.

Sparkles29 · 24/06/2025 20:24

My daughter did and was told that was the 4th incident reported that week-the police caught him & it’s now going to court

IsthataYes · 24/06/2025 20:25

Hi op I think 111 surely at the very least?
You may not recognise him but what if someone else did and reported him yesterday and today he was where you are?
I'm not getting the recognise link.

Please call 111

I understand what you mean, but in this case it really isn't obvious there is a dance school near by, I was parked on a very ordinary side road with terraced houses.

I would report but my local police are really hot on making public appeals for behaviour like this.

Bingbangboo · 24/06/2025 20:26

Yes I would report it. If nothing else it builds a picture of an individual, even if they are unlikely to take any action based on one report.

An aside, but I hate the terms used! 'Flasher' and 'flashing' make it sound funny, almost harmless in a Carry On film type of way. 'Indecent exposure' to me is a much better description.

As I said in my op, I have reported.

😬

The police need to take sex offending serious. If its on security cameras its a easy case to solve.

Management should do a do you recognise a NDN wall of shame with headshots and reg numbers on the wall.

CanOfMangoTango · 24/06/2025 20:29

I did, it was in a park in the middle of the day and he was lurking by a tree. Didn't realise what he was doing at first.

I did feel a bit useless reporting as I didn't really have much to go on in terms of description but they did get back to me and took it seriously.

You mean 101? 111 is NHS

LoudSnoringDog · 24/06/2025 20:30

Yes. They escalate

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 24/06/2025 20:31

Yes, I absolutely would.

RoxytheRexy · 24/06/2025 20:32

I reported my flasher and sent a photo of him getting into his car, photo showed his number plate. The police came and spoke to me, assured me that they would follow it up. I then get a phone call from the police saying that they had spoken to him and he had denied it so they were dropping the case. This was a couple of years ago and I’m still cross about it

OnTheBoardwalk · 24/06/2025 20:33

Glad you reported it. They will take notice and act on your report

not a flasher but my mum got verbally abused and cornered by a man. She reported it online and didn’t think any more about it till a copper turned up at her house the next day. They'd had a couple of other reports and were building a case to identify and charge the man

AnSolas · 24/06/2025 20:33

I will bet that he did not randomly pick the place.

And you would not be the only mum who uses that road as parking place.

JaniceBattersby · 24/06/2025 20:35

The police will try and find him and prosecute him if they do. If he is convicted he will be on the sex offenders’ register and subject to all its requirements and monitoring. You should absolutely report it.

Harassedmum123 · 24/06/2025 20:37

Yes, you absolutely must report it. As other pp have said, Wayne Couzens was a flasher just weeks before he murdered Sarah Everard. Once they get away with the flashing, they almost always go a next step further the next time.

JLou08 · 24/06/2025 20:38

Yes I'd report. Could be a convicted sex offender out on licence. In which case the police may be easily able to identify him as he will be known to them and he may be returned to prison which will prevent him harming another child.

thenightfeed · 24/06/2025 20:39

Absolutely! I called 101 once and they actually sent police there and then because I could still see the man in the distance and they had a police car nearby.
