Wimbledon question (for anyone who's been)

Are they very strict on the size of the handbag that can be brought into the grounds? I've just had a look at the one I was planning to bring and it's 31x47x11cm - slightly above the guidelines on the website, which state max dimensions of 40x30x30cm. Do they get the tape measure out, or is it more of an eyeball?

Just bumping this up for the evening crew!

I've often taken a rucksack, so I can't see a handbag being an issue.

BouleBaker · 24/06/2025 21:45

I don't remember them measuring anything, but do you want to cope with the uncertainty or not?

Summerhillsquare · 24/06/2025 21:50

I took a small rucksack two years ago, I was waved through after a cursory inspection.

RightSaidFrederica · 24/06/2025 21:51

It’s only 1cm over in one direction, I’m sure it would squash down?

I have been, and don’t remember any bag measuring. I suspect they just use this as a rule to stop anyone taking enormous things in.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 24/06/2025 22:06

I've taken a rucksack slightly bigger than the allowed size several times, and it's never been measured, and never been a problem. I've also entered via the queue many many times with a handbag under the size plus a small cotton shopping bag with a few bits in, so two bags instead of one and never had an issue.

I suspect if your bag looked far too big to go under your seat they would look more closely at it and might ask you to put it in left luggage, but unless things have drastically changed this year they're not measuring everyone's bags. Apart from anything else, with the large number of people needing to go through the security checks they just don't have time to measure every bags as well as check their contents.

Thanks all, that's very reassuring! I think I'll risk it, it's only slightly too big and is a squishy sort of faux leather. We're in the extremely lucky position of having been given two Debentures tickets for Court 1, and as someone who has been dreaming about going there for years I'm very very excited (and also keen to dress up a little).

Have you been yet? I’m going Tuesday and in a similar position!

Sorry I’m only seeing this now - we were there yesterday, we had a brilliant day! No issues with my large bag at all 😊 Hope you have a great time.

We had a great day too and also no issues with my bag!

Nomorecoconutboosts · 09/07/2025 15:39

Overall the dimensions of the op’s bag is similar to the volume of one measuring exactly 40x30x30 (for anyone going who may also wonder)
we are going this week, have been twice before.
i think it’s a general guideline rather than a bag 1cm over in one direction being an issue.

AppropriateAdult · 13/07/2025 23:25

In my defence, it would have been 7cm bigger in its maximum dimension, not 1cm!

@AppropriateAdultyes but I was multiplying the overall dimensions which is 1cm over (approximately) in terms of size. Smile
Anyway I’ve never seen tape measures out I think it’s just to stop people bringing huge backpacks or suitcases in!
