What's going on in Oxford, why have locals voted for this

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 15:46

From October,or whenever it starts
My DH is going to have to pay £5 a day ,that's £100 a month
Just to get to work
He can't go by train or bus because he starts and finishes times when they don't run .
Apparently from what I understand this was voted in at the local council elections.or the person who wanted to put this scheme in place was voted in ,.
This is going to effect the price of houses ,it's going to put people off moving to Oxford.
With this in mind I can't understand how this was agreed

Be great for the people on benefits not working,a nice clean car free city to spend their days in .
Meanwhile back the real world

What? This has taken a turn 😄

Oxford is a nightmare to drive into, consistently congested. Even the bus from the Park and Ride takes ages.

As you have said in previous posts he hates his job anyway and it's a crap company. Perhaps he's better off looking for a new job.

I've not seen this

If you go to the link I posted on one of my replies, I think anybody is allowed to answer the survey. It even asks how you would be affected - one of those choices being if you have to commute into the area.

CoralCrow · 23/06/2025 16:55

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/06/2025 16:52

So, because you choose not to drive and pay £10 to get home, you think that everybody else should to? That's ridiculous.

I don't choose not to drive, I'm unable to. I don't think that everyone else should not drive lol, more that the OP is basically whining about nothing.

I've not seen this

It’s on the website - there are FAQs and a summary, plus a map. Got all the info you need.

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 16:55

@Grumpycat6 definitely look into the permits.
There must be 1000s of workers in Oxford that don't actually live in the city.

Bath has had this for a couple of years except it's £6
Public transport is shit, hence the shops are closing
Debenhams a few years ago, and the legendary Jolly's in Milsom Street recently
I lived there from birth until 9 years ago and DS1 still does
i now live in a beautiful market town, Bradford on Avon.
Big range of every shop necessary up the road in Trowbridge, much maligned but it's better served than Bath.

Er, all Debenhams closed at the same time, nothing to do with your congestion charge.

Actually, I don't think the OP is whining about nothing! It's shocking that the council think they can get away with this nonsense and even more shocking that they think people should foot the bill for their vanity project, which they've been trying to implement for years!

Yeah that probably wasn't my best comment
I'm just so fed up
Everything feels so difficult financially
And now more money and more difficulties, when all your trying to do is get to work to pay your bills

Bikes rule the roost in Oxford, and then the buses. They want people to use the park and rides and either take the bus or cycle into the centre of town. Oxford is not a car-friendly city and hasn't been for decades, it's difficult to get around by car and a lot of households that live within the ringroad don't even own a car.

Meadowfinch · 23/06/2025 16:59

Park at the Park&Ride and then cycle. Not difficult.

GasPanic · 23/06/2025 17:00

Looking at the online map it is only the very centre of Oxford. Where there isn't much parking anyway ?

It would probably be cheaper to get a bus from the park and ride every day.

If lots of his colleagues are going to be affected by this they need to all get together and talk to the managers.
A company can't run without staff so surely management will want to come up with a solution.

This is the answer right here. The company need to put forward their concerns on the consultation as they have staff who can’t get to work through any other means due to business shift needs.

A lot of these road and parking charges don’t affect those of us privileged to work in cushy offices or in a hybrid manner, it usually affects those in shift work or unsociable hours work. So it’s easy to poo poo concerns.

But Oxford has rubbish transport as it is, most people from the area don’t really bother going into central Oxford.

Don't you have to pay to park though?
So money wise he might as well pay the fiver.

I mean they're literally moaning about having to pay to get to work. On their partner's behalf. £100 a month to get to work isn't ludicrous. Is your commute free?

Already paying £100 a month in petrol
So you think it's ok to double that to £200.
Not everyone has that free cash

Well, there is a consultation, but knowing Oxford and the way previous consultations have gone, I wouldn't hold my breath. I've let them know my thoughts, I expect lots of other residents will too. What's annoying is them saying that the money raised from fines/charges etc will go towards paying for the system - a system that most of us didn't want in the first place!

Knowing Oxford council, it won’t make a difference.

Witney had a consultation where locals and businesses voted against the centre being car free - they did it anyway. Oxfordshire council don’t care about residents opinions.

It's an extra £100 on top of what he's already paying. I'm sure many people can't magic up an extra £100

Holloway isn't the centre of Oxford, neither is Marston Ferry Road - it seems they're putting measures in the to stop parents driving their kids to school - why else would they put those measures in place between 7-9am and 3-6pm? Yes, those kids could ride their bikes, but many of those using the Marston Ferry Road are going to schools which are probably quite a distance from their homes.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 23/06/2025 17:07

If he took public transport he’d pay as much if not more

Lmao I know. As I said before, I work for minimum wage and have to get a bus to work and taxis home. Far more than £200 a month. And I'm not making a thread crying about it on Mumsnet I'm just getting on with my life. You're talking about house prices going down and people on benefits having free roam of the city lol. Get in the real world.

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 16:07

We don't even live in Oxford
He just works there
So now he's going to be charged for getting to work .
We haven't got a spare £100 a month to pay this
Ridiculous

Lots of people pay to get to work, people use trains and buses for commuting and pay for these - they are not free

CampanulaMila · 23/06/2025 17:08

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 15:59

Has this definitely been agreed
What about getting kids to school , people are going to be paying a fortune

I imagine people will walk, cycle or take the bus to get their kids to school - it’s hardly rocket science?

Absolutely correct. They hold the consultation because they're probably required to - how they then ignore the results or, more likely, skew them to their liking, is beyond most people.

Grocery Store Smiling GIF by Moonbug

My three-year-old child has been attending a private nursery for the past two months but is still struggling to adjust. Meanwhile, we've been offered a space in a state school's preschool nursery. My child faces additional challenges, including:

  • Constipation due to not being potty trained yet
  • Picky eating habits
  • Needing to be fed

We're torn between continuing with the private nursery or switching to the state school nursery. We have a welcome meeting soon where we'll need to submit documents.

Additionally, we'd like to know more about the ideal timing for different educational stages in the UK. Specifically:

  • What is the ideal age range for preschool/nursery education?
  • When do children typically start Reception, and what can we expect from this stage?
  • What are the typical age ranges for primary school?

Should we stick with the private nursery or opt for the state school nursery? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A lot of parents have to drop their kids off on the way to work. A lot of parents live far away from school. I wouldn’t be so flippant to those driving their kids to school.

I live close to the school, I realize how fortunate I am to do so and to live near work. A lot of people (usually mothers tasked with this) don’t.
