I was just using a drawing pin to reset my WiFi router and it got me thinking about how many items I use as not intended!
i have been called the Queen of improvisation more than once!
Here are a few of mine, I'm sure I will think of more
Safety pins
vaseline.. from dry patches, lips and eyebrows it also shines and protect shoes( and skin everywhere) see also lipsalves
Vaseline also swells and hides scratches on solid wood
Zip lock bags.. Bacofoil zipper are brilliant
Philadelphia tubs as drawer organisers for things like batteries, Allen keys, screws
Tea towel.. when my boys were younger I never went out without one and a damp flannel( in freezer bag)
tea towel was used for a multitude of things from a makeshift nappy, hat, bib, and parasol.
i find them useful as a napkin now as I'm clumsy especially over a white blouse
Over to you lovely lot

Elastic bands!!!! So handy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/06/2025 20:27

Fine crochet hooks are very useful for many small niggly tasks

Talipesmum · 22/06/2025 20:31

I use our plastic potato masher to close the small top kitchen window. I’m too short to reach it it’s too high up.

MsNevermore · 22/06/2025 20:32

We’ve got “the grabbing stick”…..pretty sure it’s actually for opening and closing the blinds on the windows that go up my stairs that no one can reach. But it’s become “the grabbing stick” to retrieve all the items that fall off the kitchen countertop and down the side of the fridge 🫠🤷🏻‍♀️😂

You mentioned lip salve, I use one for my cuticles, eyebrows and sometimes a bit to stick down those few fluffy hairs that pop up when I haven't any serum handy. I've even used it in place of hand cream. Useful to have in handbag. My granny would be proud.

tofuprincess · 22/06/2025 21:11

I cut up margarine lids to use as plant labels.

Ihateslugs · 22/06/2025 21:18

I cut up envelopes and junk leaflets to use as shopping lists - only if there is a plain reverse side. I then keep them neatly held together with a bull dog clip.

I use our soup ladle for the same!

Diversion · 22/06/2025 21:22

I use my kitchen tongs to grab and pull the cord on the kitchen blinds when it has gone too high for me to reach (and cant be bothered getting the stool out).

Supersimkin7 · 22/06/2025 21:28

Wine bottle as rolling pin, always.

Spatula here too for window, to get stuff off top shelf and to chop up flapjacks in tray.

Yogurt pots as luxury homes for seedlings 🌱

Dreamies mega tubs are indestructible & hold all my sewing bits - yes, the cat is spoilt.

QuietlyWonderful · 22/06/2025 21:32

Where PPs use a potato masher or a soup ladle, I have a spaghetti server - I catch the window latch through the draining hole.

Gagamama2 · 22/06/2025 21:32

Turkey basters, plastic cups, spoons, measuring scoops all used as bath toys (and much more popular than any of the actual bath toys)

TeaAndStrumpets · 22/06/2025 21:35

I use an old metal ice cream scoop to measure washing powder. It doesn't hold much so it is perfect for the amount I need. I also keep an old table knife in the washing powder box to stab any annoying clumps.

Gu pots are good for seedlings

AmyDuPlantier · 22/06/2025 21:35

Do you really take a tea towel to a restaurant and tuck it into the collar of your white top??

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/06/2025 21:36

A potato peeler doubles as a good screwdriver, in my experience. I’ve changed many plugs using mine.

RiderGirl · 22/06/2025 21:40

I've got a kitchen knife that I've used for years as a substitute screwdriver!

Edited

Gu pots are amazing for lots of things! Ditto the little terracotta pots you get with cheese fondue or fancy tapas

MeatloafSingsSongs · 22/06/2025 21:50

Pegs can be used all over the house. Closing packets, making sure curtains stay closed after cat barges past, keeping quilt corners in place while fighting to put on duvet cover. Also fish slice, for frying and reaching into high cupboards, Im very short, my famiky tall....

Hedjwitch · 22/06/2025 21:50

Yoghurt tubs and egg boxes for seedlings
Envelopes for shopping lists
Old shirts and kids' vests for dusters
Pint glasses as vases
Plates as ' lids' on containers
Any nice wrapping paper or gift bag reused
Bread bags for sandwiches and packed lunches
Coffee grounds and egg shells as fertiliser
Gu containers for desserts
Takeaway boxes for everything...screw,nails,food storage..
All jars reused as containers for something else
Ceramic inside pot of knackered slow cooker now a water feature
Old wellies as plant pots
Old bits of soap stored and remoulded into " new" soap.

Pretty much everything can be reused in some way.

I love the peg idea. I have no idea why I’ve never thought of that!

I've just remembered I use mine as a cereal scoop!
Also I use a laundry dosing ball as a dog kibble 45g x2 daily

Brilliant! You used to be able to buy a soap press to make a new bar. They were a bit like a burger press.. wonder if that would work instead🤔😆
