I was just using a drawing pin to reset my WiFi router and it got me thinking about how many items I use as not intended!
i have been called the Queen of improvisation more than once!
Here are a few of mine, I'm sure I will think of more
Safety pins
vaseline.. from dry patches, lips and eyebrows it also shines and protect shoes( and skin everywhere) see also lipsalves
Vaseline also swells and hides scratches on solid wood
Zip lock bags.. Bacofoil zipper are brilliant
Philadelphia tubs as drawer organisers for things like batteries, Allen keys, screws
Tea towel.. when my boys were younger I never went out without one and a damp flannel( in freezer bag)
tea towel was used for a multitude of things from a makeshift nappy, hat, bib, and parasol.
i find them useful as a napkin now as I'm clumsy especially over a white blouse
Over to you lovely lot

My sister doesn't have a full length mirror in her house so she uses the recording from her Blink doorbell to check her outfit from all angles. She does look a bit deranged doing a slow turn on her front path every morning though so it's not for everyone!

Another use for a metal potato masher. Slices of stuff that have stuck together in the freezer...one edge of masher inserted between them, whack the other side with a rolling pin. I used to use a knife but the masher is much safer!

I have an old sundae spoon - the kind with the long handle - and it's perfect for making coffee in my tall travel mug.

An old pool noodle chopped up and stuffed into a pair of tall boots keeps them upright.

I use the sundae spoon for getting mayo and other things out of tall jars

A clothes peg and some no slip socks provided plenty of entertainment for my toddler in the heat last week and a game of "you can't catch me" in the house when it was too hot outside.
Also I carry my washing in and old pillow case from the actual laundry basket saves cluttering downstairs up as I just shove the case in the wash with stuff out the way also on holiday to use the laundry saves trundling back to base to put the washing bag back.
IKEA food bags - brought some a good few month back now and use them for everything they are excellent in the car as rubbish bins on long journeys I have a set few for in the car and keep washing and reusing the rubbish ones take to cafes etc too to try and avoid toddler making too much mess as I can throw it away in the bin after.

I don’t get the clothes peg & sock thing?????

The socks so she didn't slip and the game was to chase and clip the peg onto each other. She refuses to go without socks

Fish slice to tuck fitted sheet between top of mattress and headboard

Hedjwitch · 29/06/2025 21:38

Empty wine bottle used as a rolling pin

declutteringmymind · 29/06/2025 22:25

Mini bulldog clips to keep bags of frozen veg, bags of crisps closed instead of those clippy things. I have a separate mop for scrubbing the bath and wall tiles.

the washing up brush gets used to sweep the worktops before they are wiped.

SingleAHF · 29/06/2025 23:35

I keep a long, old fashioned umbrella in the electric cupboard and use it upside down to reach up to switch my main switch or MCBs on or off.

SingleAHF · 29/06/2025 23:43

I usea bread knife to thinly slice tomatoes.

SingleAHF · 29/06/2025 23:45

I use a set of plastic side plates from icelands picnic range as food dishes for the cat. Cost ten for £1.

stayathomer · 29/06/2025 23:48

I cut off the tops of old socks and use them as hair bobbins, I use the old sock itself for cleaning

SingleAHF · 29/06/2025 23:49

I use a plastic nub designed to stop kitchen cabinets from banging shut, on the edge of my desk to stop the door hitting it.

stayathomer · 29/06/2025 23:52

Oh, just remembered old toothbrushes for cleaning small spaces!

stayathomer · 29/06/2025 23:54

oh and a heavy plastic bag on an old pillow is great for kneeling on when weeding (dh’s idea ages ago but I still love it!)

SingleAHF · 29/06/2025 23:57

I use a multi-tiered tall vegetable rack to keep often-used documents to hand next to my desk.

Talipesmum · 22/06/2025 20:31

I use our plastic potato masher to close the small top kitchen window. I’m too short to reach it it’s too high up.

Yes me too, and I am so happy to see I'm not the only one using pegs, and old bits of card for shopping lists etc.
Great thread

After getting fed up with summer hats being plonked down on various surfaces in the house, I now tie a long length of twine to a nail on the wall (so the twine hangs down vertically). The hats are then attached to the twine with pegs (or bulldog clips). It saves space and makes me ridiculously happy 😊

During this hot weather, any empty glass bottles are being re-used to chill home made iced tea/cordials in the fridge. Small glass jars are used to mix and store dressings for salads.

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/06/2025 00:32

I'm loving the hat idea

VWT5 · 30/06/2025 00:35

Childs fishing net on a cane - to trap and release bees and wasps from indoors.

Garbera · 30/06/2025 01:19

This thread just keeps giving. @VWT5 that is utter genius.

I'm not completely sure this is an alternative use, but hydrocolloid dressings/blister plasters are great for drawing out splinters.

Ahsheeit · 30/06/2025 07:45

Bread knife cuts cheese better than any other without it sticking to the blade, as much as with normal sharp knives.
