I was just using a drawing pin to reset my WiFi router and it got me thinking about how many items I use as not intended!
i have been called the Queen of improvisation more than once!
Here are a few of mine, I'm sure I will think of more
Safety pins
vaseline.. from dry patches, lips and eyebrows it also shines and protect shoes( and skin everywhere) see also lipsalves
Vaseline also swells and hides scratches on solid wood
Zip lock bags.. Bacofoil zipper are brilliant
Philadelphia tubs as drawer organisers for things like batteries, Allen keys, screws
Tea towel.. when my boys were younger I never went out without one and a damp flannel( in freezer bag)
tea towel was used for a multitude of things from a makeshift nappy, hat, bib, and parasol.
i find them useful as a napkin now as I'm clumsy especially over a white blouse
Over to you lovely lot

I use kitchen tongs to get stuff of the top shelves in the kitchen.
I use pegs to keep bags closed in the freezer.
I use a head band when its windy and I have the windows open to stop the blinds bashing about.

I use our plastic potato masher to close the small top kitchen window. I’m too short to reach it it’s too high up.

Me too!

I've had a wooden rolling pin for years that has never been used on pastry. It has exclusively been used for situations that demand whacking things. Helping a knife spatchcock a chicken, making biscuit crumbs, that sort of thing. It also get used on DIY things when I can't be bothered to go to the garage to find a hammer.

Denimrules · 22/06/2025 22:44

Curved ended loft pole to hook things out deep storage spaces and push them back in again.

Im loving this thread. Its the antithesis of the multitude of consumerist single use tat shite clutter you constantly see on YouTube directing to someone's Amazon affiliate link page 😂

Yes, I often wonder why Joseph Joseph products are so coveted Most are unnecessary pieces of plastic!
I do like my flip up dish drainer and sinkbase soap pump, but they're practical.

Id never heard of this brand had to do a search! If something works for you- great! Im thinking more daft things like apple or pineapple corers but I'm sure some people may find them helpful:)

Gu pots for draining fat or oil out of the frying pan.

I have an old-fashioned egg whisk I use for the same purpose. I'm tall enough, but the washing machine is in the way.

Both ex nurses and have a running joke about 1001 uses for a pair of artery forceps

Exactly. I can reach, but not if there’s stuff on the drying rack on the draining board. Which there always is.

Glad to know of all the other ingenious ladle / masher / whisk window closing devices out there!

I use my metal one to hook balloons, Christmas decorations, etc onto a hook in my living room ceiling.

InTheWindow · 23/06/2025 00:42

Empty big match boxes to store small stationary like elastic bands and paper clips. Label one of the long sides and stand them in a row in the drawer.

Wooden pegs to hold the pine cones on ribbons that I hang in the windows at Christmas together. I write which window they are for on the peg.

FrodoBiggins · 23/06/2025 00:43

Banged a nail into the wall to hold a picture with the pestle from my pestle and mortar today cos I couldn't be bothered to get the hammer from the shed.
Also I end up with loads of bulldog clips from work and every packet in my cupboard, fridge and freezer is closed with a bulldog clip!

Latenightreader · 23/06/2025 00:51

I'm currently using a wooden spatula to clean dried adhesive/grouting splatters from my new tiles. Turns out I am a slow tiler who needs plenty of clean up time...

booksnbaking · 23/06/2025 01:29

Although I’d swear we don’t take any medicines, we somehow ended up with loads of those little plastic spoons/scoops from e.g. cough mixture, powdered supplements etc. I stick them in spice and herb jars to save looking for a teaspoon every time.

I also have a thing for reusing plastic bags (washed, obv) and saving clingfilm from fruit and veg packs. Yes to using blank junk mail pages for shopping lists, too. And we possibly eat considerably more of a particular brand of ice cream than we need to, just to get the really usefully sized plastic tubs.

In our supermarket, bunches of spring onions etc. come with rubber bands, so we have a vast and fabulous collection (of rubber bands, not spring onions. Don’t be silly).

None of these things are going to save the world or make the tiniest dent in climate change, but they give me a disproportionate amount of satisfaction.

Elastic bands!!!! So handy.

I have loads of elastic bands! However, they deteriorate over time, so most of mine snap now when I try to use them.

I'm pleased to see you are all equally as resourceful!

They grey plastic bags that online orders sometimes come in get re-used to pick up my cat’s poo.

If stuff comes in boxes, I’m always using the boxes to send parcels.

The disposable airline masks can be used as blindfolds, although I think cheating is too easy with those, so I also use a bandanna for this purpose, to be sure the birthday girl can’t see a thing when she pins the tail.

AmyDuPlantier · 22/06/2025 21:35

Do you really take a tea towel to a restaurant and tuck it into the collar of your white top??

I have a very large bust shelf which inevitably gets messy when eating. I bought a set of 12 different coloured napkins together with a cord with two clips on the end. The cord goes round my neck and clips onto the edge of the napkin, forming a bib! I can colour coordinate to my clothes!

And yes, I do take one with me when I go out for a meal, I’m old enough not to be bothered what people think!

I have another one - it's called DH. 😂

Ihateslugs · 23/06/2025 15:26

I use old bbq grabbers with long handles to clean leaves from my outside drains. Also useful for picking up litter when weeding flower beds.

megatwat · 23/06/2025 15:26

I have a rubbery spatula that I use to put my eczema cream onto my back as I cannot reach with my hands

The small plastic lidded tubs from the chippy that contain mushy peas, I wash in the dishwasher and use them for storage, they hold exactly one kipling small apple pie with the lid it keeps fresh to keep in my bag
